Xara Extreme?

Would Xara be a good program for a beginner to make some graphic content/banners/or some kind of logo? What program could someone recommend for someone wanting to learn how to make custom graphics? I know we have alot of talented photo editors here *cough Game Over and Chudley. Any suggestions? Thanks guys.

Don't know about Xara but I did use GIMP a bit, its open source and free.
