Worth getting a second 780?

I'm wondering if it's worth getting a second 780? Though games run fine as it is and I am happy(ish) with my system but SLI seems to be the way forward.

My problem is that the way the PCIE slots are laid out on my Maximus IV Gene, the two cards will be kinda sandwiched together.

Or should I just wait until I build a new system which I am planning to do around next summer when new gen stuff are out.

Just not sure about games like Watch Dogs and other upcoming games whether my single 3GB 780 at 1440p will suffer a bit.

I dare say with 2 GTX780 SCs you could probably bypass the GTX800 series and most of the 900 series for that matter and look at a new CPU & Motherboard in 2015, the 2x 780s should see you fine until at least late 2016ish.

The 780's even in such close quarters will be fine dude, Nothing to worry about, Get that 2nd 780 and enjoy SLI goodness ^_^

Thanks guys, it's a tough choice. No matter what, my system will need upgrading in 2015. That's my goal and going to save up until then, just in two minds whether to get a second 780 SC or sell it and get 2x 780ti's.

Or just buy a PS4 :p

Tom, so it's not really worth going SLI with air cooling in a mATX form factor then?

Agreed, I think it's doable on air, but to be honest I'd just save for your next system. If it runs good, why change it? Save for the next build! :)

Personally if I ever get the upgrade tingles, I'll probably put it into something like a Steam Box or a portable build.

A work mate of mine has the Z87 Gryphon, Also MATX, And has 2 x 780 Ti's installed on it, Temps are fine, They only become a problem if your case is tiny and you have horrendous airflow.

Not the most pleasant internal showcase. Needs cleaning and well re-doing. The card underneath the GPU is my sound card which really doesn't get used anyway. I usually just output through the monitor.

The GPU as it stands now idles around 25 - 30 degrees and goes no higher than 73 degrees on full load with OC

The... the monitor... What's wrong with you? ._.

As mentioned before, if you just want to fiddle around with hardware you could also use the money on a little back-up system. 750k, GTX 750 Ti /660, Small SSD. Should be possible ;)

I don't game that much, I usually just post here and watch YT vids, which then begs the question why get a second card, I do go through a phase of constantly gaming and that is when I use my £30 X-Fi with 5.1 surround. It's much better than the shitty Recon3d I used to use.

Feronix, I just want to upgrade/refresh my current rig which I plan to do next year but I also want my current rig to play games nicely on 1440P until then.

That's fair enough, but to me it seems like you're now just wanting to upgrade so badly that you're about to waste a huge chunk of money on extra performance that you don't really need.

Or did you just make the thread so everyone would tell you to get it and you'd feel better about the purchase? ;)

If you want to improve your current set-up, you might as well go custom loop and overclock the shit out of it?

You do have a good point, I guess I just have the upgrade bug and having more money than sense moment. The sensible thing would be just to wait until next year and just do a complete new build.

Edge also has a good point too about a Steam Box, I could keep the current rig and use that as a Steam Box or a HTPC once I have done my new rig.

I guess money in bank account increases temptation to buy new hardware which may give you slightly better performance but may regret it later down the line.

I do apologise for wasting anyones time with this topic though.

If you have the money available for another 780 or 2x 780ti's after selling your existing, but are happy with your rig as it is, I diagnose you with Upgraditis. :)

The cure? Scratch it!

However, instead of another gpu, how about "investing" in some water cooling hardware? That'll keep you busy for a while and you can carry some of the parts and all of the experience on to your next build in 2015. Build a log in here and contribute.

As for two gpu's so close - I ran two 670's arse-to-cheek for a little while and they of course worked, but the temperature in the first card increased by about 5C, both were slightly noisier and it limited the overclock as a pair (weakest card dictates). A gap between them is always preferred.

I plan on doing a build log here :) I will create a new water park like that guy did and the reservoir will be the fish tank with the catfish in it :D

I have decided that I will keep my current rig as it is and just save my ass off until 2015 and when I am ready I will buy everything in one hit. I was planning on getting a laptop too, I might still do that this year, I've never actually owned one and they are great when travelling.

My target budget will be around £3,000 which i'm guessing with a custom loop it will probably mount up really quickly. But yeah, that's what I am going to do and my current rig will either be a Steam Box or a HTPC.

£3k for a looped up system is quite a large budget if you ask me.

It sounds to me like you have the upgrade itch. Especially saying " I don't game much" then in the same post " I want to game happily at 1440p "

Save for now dude, OR put in some watercooling :) much MUCH better investment

+1 what SuB said, If you really want to upgrade then go the water cooling loop, Nothing quite like seeing and hearing water safely cool your system, Looks freakin awesome in other words ^_^
