Workstation and Gaming questions

Well, I hope I can help

Maya and Zbrush will both work without workstation class cards. The main difference between your 460's and quadro pro or Fire-pro is speed and quality. Both Nvidia and AMD severely hobble they're consumer level cards when they detect certain applications running, for instance Maya, Zbrush, LightWave, Max, Auto-cad, Solid works and on and on..... The only good news is that in most cases neither company outright disables features except for OpenGL bufferd (VBO). Yeah I grant that is a big deal, especially when dealing with complex scenes. That said, when scenes get that complex they are probably beyond the quadro 600/FX 580 or the Firepro V4800. What all this means is, though it may go more slowly than you would like; or have an occasional artifact, for most Digital content creation applications you can get by with non professional cards. At least until you are in a production environment where your boss insists that you have a workstation card that can manipulate 500,000,000 quads and is willing to pay for it.
