why would i need a proxy?

To protect your identity while brosing the web or usign IRC.

When using a proxy, the ip address of the proxy server not your own ip address will be listed in server logs.

Only really useful if you are planning on doing something naughty!

yeah, i posted it mainly because here at the college i goto, they have most IRC ports closed so you cannot use IRC, using proxies though, changes that. makes the college servers think you are connecting to something else, for example using a proxy that connects through port 80. and 80 is the WWW port.
