It's not exactly a work area for my PC, nor is it my desk

But i thought i would show off what 6hours of work has done for us at work

This is the second building of 3 that we have had to fit out, the first was alot more stressful than this one (163 PCs on the first stage, 53 PCs on this one)

We mount all the kit on MDF boards which slide into cupboards which saves money on cases in the long run, also makes life easier when it comes to changing dead equipment

^ before anyone says anything, we know alot are wonky, thats my managers fault for measuring the MDF boards wrong, only way to get all 4 corners screwed was to put them on a wonk >_<

I know exactly how you feel... Just spent the weekend rolling out 55 new PC's plus 60 unboxed 24" monitors.. That took longest of all. Imaging was a ***** too.

I'm just a boring old secondary school IT techy

I was quite lucky though, when i started the IT department hadn't had alot of money invested in it for many years, the network was falling apart, the machines were randomly dropping off the network and hard drives were dieing all over the shop

Over the past 2 years we've invested over £200,000 on time and equipment to get the entire network infrastructure sorted as well as new PCs pretty much everywhere (as well as staff laptops, a total of about 750 PCs and 120 laptops) every switch, server, pc and about 75% of the network cabling has been renewed

Luckily it all coincides with a big school building overhaul as the council have invested about £2mil in total i think, 3 new buildings, all windows changed from single glazing to double glazing, new carpets fitted, classrooms painted etc

Standard length video leads tend to reach ok from the boxes to the monitors on the desk, there is the odd one where it doesn't line up due to the builders beign a bit ape like on the IQ scale

Like i say though, this is nothing compared to the 163 we had to do in another building, i'll try and find the photos from our "production line" from that

Although having kids coming up to you asking to do things on the PC's must be a pain!

That's the main problem with the new buildings, we should have learnt a lesson from the first building we fitted out that heat is an issue in the 3 big IT rooms with 30 machines in (hard drives feeling the effects more than anything else)

But my manager hasn't listened and has designed phase 2 around the exact same thing >_<

Nice and easy working in a school IT inviroment isnt it! although when those little buggers let their fingers run away with them.

We've decided we're going to (after the building hand over) cut a hole in the front of each of the boxes and have a fan on it, the heat is a slight problem, though its not like i didnt tell them to change the design/add some sort of airflow!

If the machines do not have to be reached regularly I'd have thought about putting 10 or so of them in one case. So you have some kind of tunnel with 10 motherboards in it and 3-4x120mm at every end to make sure the air keeps moving.

i think your getting the wrong end of the stick, it looks like the pc's are going to be hidden in desks.

he works in a school by the looks of it. Schools have to by law stick to a ratio of kids/computers.
