work experience

Hi everyone,

I'm in year 10 and I'm about to take part in wprk experience and I have been looking for a wprl placement that is based around computers. And in London I have been having trouble getting a job that is around computers because ''I don't know anything '' although I do they refuse to accept it. So does anyone have any ideas of where I could try.

I've spent about 3.5+ years on the PC assembling manufacture. Been doing everything. And you will laugh, but since 2009 theres no PC assembling companies at all. I can't get job, despite Ive been with PCs for many years. Now this is just a hobby, which is useless without cash.

I think this is common lame excuse of employers, that they won't get workers with no experience. Simply due to millions of unemployed specialists. Find some buddy, who will teach you, and then go and try.

It is a huge shame but these days it does seem to be who you know rather than what you know.

Does your school not give out a list of work placements?

Look for IT based companies in your area that have the type of jobs you want like your local Council's IT department for example. Try and find out who the manager is and send them a letter or email or even phone them and explain to them that you are still in school and you are very interested in working in IT and that you are looking for a work experience placement.

Sell yourself as much as you can, tell them you are hard working, enthusiastic, how much you want to a career with computers. Basically make them want to give you a placement because of how eager you are.

The worst thing that can happen is they say no and even if they say no at least you have tried.

You are in a good position still being in school because you are what employers are looking for, a young enthusiastic person who they can train up. Keep sending letters/emails and phoning as many companies as you can, it doesn't matter how many people say no, just keep sending them because some places will also keep your details on record and may contact you at a later date.

I did my work experience ( yes some years ago

) With BT enjoyed the work even had a job offer for when I was of age 21 and driving, I don't drive so never ended up working for them, but... They are a good company and your learn things from doing so a lot more to it than you might think, perhaps working with them on there broadband side of things or mobile aspects would be something you would not only enjoy but learn a lot from, they are good trainers and will buddy you up with someone your be very busy, personally I would recommend it.

Unless your looking to be in web design or something then there really isn't that many large system builders, I think a big company in a tech related environment is better than no tech at all, at least that's how I felt about it when taking mine

Hope it at least makes you look across a wider scope of things good luck and have fun

One place you could try is Yoyotech, located in Central London and see what they say

I sent a letter to my local PC shop and they didn't even bother replying to me!

Joke's on them, nobody shops there anyway. Overpriced junk

Good luck with your find mate. In the end I worked at a local radio station for my work experience. Produced our own shows, it was good fun. Got to see the server room I guess

Both look like they have more up-to-date tech. I'd recommend asking them, yeah!

I'm in Yr 11 and did work experience with my brother's company, SBS (School Business Services).

Look them up, they might take you on as they work in many London schools.

The worst that can happen is they say no

Ok Thanks everyone for your great responses and advice. I have just finished emailing YoYo tech to see if they have any work experience placements and have yet to receive a reply from another company that works on a much smaller basis. My school is trying to help but with the amount of people not bothering to even look for a placement it has its work cut out for itself. Any other suggestions would be taken with utmost gratitude.

You have to sell yourself better. It was hard for me too but if you learn how to show that you are computer savvy without taking a "test" you may become a more viable option. The reason most companies will not hire you is because you don't either have a Certification or a diploma, and a company has liability. The less qualifications you have, the more liability because they are taking a risk in hiring you as you do not have previous experience and have not shown any qualifications. If an employer hires you without any qualifications, the boss is risking his job if you screw up, if you are qualified you risk your own job and the boss gets a slap on the hand if you screw up.

With this knowledge I just gave you I hope it helps you to understand and how to sell yourself better.

Yeah i know about trying to sell myself and have been told it by my uncle because of the place he works sometimes he has to take a similar risk ;]
