Wolfenstein : The New Order

I've been playing Wolfenstein The New Order for a while now and I'm pleasantly surprised, I'm enjoying it!

Despite the fact that it has the IdTech5 engine under the hood which means no love for SLI and quite rough textures up close, the story line and cinematics of the game are very enjoyable.

Performance is excellent too considering the lack of SLI; one 780ti manages to maintain 60fps at 2560x1600 with the settings cranked up. I've seen it almost scratch the limit of the 3000MB available vram though!

This is one game I'll be going back to play again at the highest difficulty setting (okay, maybe one down from it!).

Graphics don't matter, input and movement matters. iDtech holds the crown since quake 1 there.

What? Of course graphics matter, why else would we spend hundreds on graphics cards? Because the PCB looks pretty? It's not the be-all and end-all of computer games, I'll grant you that, but it's a big feckin' part of it. A dinosaur's turd more than "don't matter" . Otherwise we'd still be playing the original Wolfenstein...

There are no in-game AA settings, another "benefit" of the idtech5 engine I'm told. The only two settings that are not maxed are the PPF (pages per frame) and the FOV (field of vision). Now that you've mentioned it, I'll have a play with the Nvidia control panel and see if setting anything there has an effect. However, I'd rather play at 60fps and see a few jaggies (not a huge deal at 2560x1600) than <60fps and no jaggies.

You are talking to a guy who just played a quake 3 duel. I don't move on to worse games because they look prettier.
There are still quite a few people who speedrun Wolfenstein 3D btw.
There are games where nice graphics can make a difference, RPGs for example, but especially in FPS games i don't have the time to look at a wall just to see if the texture resolution is top notch.


It released in 1999 and still not a single FPS game could beat it. Pretty sad.

For competition fps's I'd agree. My favourite was Unreal Tournament Instagib. I rocked at that . Aimbot was a compliment .

However, now I like my games to be cinematic in quality, to be absorbed in to them. Graphics are part of that, but so is a good story and sense of control.

Wolfenstein is a damn fine game even if some of the world textures are bit blocky up close.

Ah I see. You could always play at a higher res and downscale I guess if you were really anal xD

I really want to buy this but I've heard a lot of negative mainly about the image and texture pop-in similar to Rage and that's got me a little leery. I've been a Wolfenstein fan since Castle Wolfenstein on the Commodore 64 back in 1982 so I'm willing to forgive a lot but I'm gonna wait til some more reviews and gameplay videos come out and for the price to drop down a little before I take the plunge. I recently got to Borderlands 2 in my backlog and am having a really great time with it so I've got something to keep me occupied while I wait.

I never played the original but loved Return to Castle Wolfenstein with the skeletons and all, epic game. Tempted to buy this but I have mixed feelings about the robot Nazi's. I had the last Wolfenstein actually come to think of it, not to impressive.
