Windows XP vs. Vista: The Benchmark Rundown

Well it is a cash push, that`s what m$ are all about at the end of the day. (and we`re meant to praise them for it)

However Tox, thinking back, I tend to remember booting XP up and thinking it was lightning quick to start... funny thing tho, is that there is no way it started up back then any quicker than either of the 2 xp machines startup that I have here. They`re severly stripped down too, may aswell be server editions.

I was reminded of this a short time ago. It`s a perceptive feeling of how quick u think it is and was - well weird. U gotta bare in mind too that I had a slot A athlon at the time. No way in the world is it quick that the 3800x2 at booting....

But I remember it being quicker LOL!

I personally thought XP was great after ME came out. Not sure how the 98 favorers felt differently.

My aunt's pc came with it...Q6600 and 2gb of ram, etc.

IE died numerous times

I formatted

Got all the latest drivers myself

Same...

It also remember it freezing up at random points on my uncles laptop then unfreezing afterwards

Formatted that..put it back on...same =/

Also happened on my ultimate copy on my pc

I dunno, I mean I`ve not had any major problems installing it. And like has already been said, it goes pretty quickly.

I will say tho, some issues I have had with my own stuff were hardware related. In terms of something like memory not having the correct settings or similar. It`s almost as if the OS bursts everything just b4 it finally launches into the desktop - and that`s when something fails.

Increase a volt or something and it worked - stable.

How a sold system does that, again I don`t know - if I was really suspicious I`d ask u if u tried to oc it or something :p :p

1 other thing. I install it on some systems and get devices left that need drivers... but everything seems to work ok. Pretty ambiguous descriptions too.

When is SP1 comming out for Vista (not the RC)? Wud be interesting to see the performance of XP and Vista then.

Vista has worked fine for me and been more stable than XP. Only issues I ever have are when my PC isn't stable or if a 3rd party hasn't writtena program/drivers very well (64bit too)

Agree with Rast here.

Plus I do not see the point in Vista at the moment.. as rast said rumours of Windows 7 in Q2 2009.. which suggests to me that Vista will be the one to be ruled out first not XP.

We will see of course.. But I see Vista as a failed OS.. just like ME.

XP when it came out.. I remember it, I was impressed from the start, not much difference memory hogging wise from 2000 but it somehow was able to do some clever things.

When I first saw it I was amazed by its ability to bring an app out of "not respondingness" and back to life without crashing the PC.

XP was a god send.. there was no doubt.

Vista on the other hand.. it was sloppy. A little push for the extra cash.

Well thats my POV.. ;)

Love you all! :D

I`ve had so many little issues with the explorer, that I installed the newer DirectoryOpus. All my woes in that department are gone. I`ve got an up-a-level-arrow back too :)

I`ve also managed to achieve 23mbs now :)

Biggest issue I have now are 3rd party firewall/virus/security suites. Settled on Outpost atm, down to having to restart every 2 days or so cos of it stalling. (screws folding up too)

Tox definately isn`t the only person who doesn`t like it. I don`t personally see it as a proper release. By the time the majority get used to it`s quirks, the rumored Q2 2009 OS will be out, or atleast beta`d. To me this quickness in pursuing a newer OS confirms this one as being a stop-gap. An ME if u will.

But, XP will be shunned soon enough. Dx10 will not be released for it, cos it`d be foolish financially to do so, and the newer and newer games will graduate from full Dx9 (partial Dx10) to full Dx10 (no Dx9) - which gives u no choice.

What I took from tomshardware`s results, even with the biggest pinch of salt, is that in all honesty, with things taken into account, there isn`t that much performance difference. Atleast not enough to wave a stick at. OpenGL apps - well, what can u do.

The biggest disgrace for me is that this isn`t good enough. A newer OS should be a better performer, not keeping pace with the old one.

Release Dx10 for XP at ur peril tbh.

I seem to remember loads of people moaning when xp was released saying it was a memory hog. You guys have to remember that xp was designed X years ago when hardware performance was crap. Vista has been designed for hardware thats current.

So you cant really compare speeds. You should test both os's when there 5 years or so old. That would make it fair.

I've not seen much point in spending loads on buying vista and a new directx10 graphics card yet.

I remember when XP came out, it was amazingly buggy and cost loads of customers hundreds in software and time to put right. The most costly was a company who had a young IT manager who unfortunately decided that every pc from then on would have XP. It then cost them £1000's to update and patch most of their financial office as Sage wouldn't run. Also a few companies who had problems with old DOS style software.

Looking at Vista and the pricing, for the money I don't see that much point in downgrading to it. I think if I had a directx10 GPU, I might put it on dual boot just to test it.

The few 'everyday people' (I mean people who aren't overclockers/engineers/enthusiasts) who I know who have vista have been complaining to me about it tho, saying about performance issues. All of them asked me to make it look like windows xp aswell

I don't like the way they have pushed Vista onto people by forcing all new pc's to have vista. I did like it when Dell decided to give you the option of having XP :)

The only good features that I can sort of see is the way you can skin windows with transparency and the way it looks prettier (2 things which were also factors when looking at XP all those years ago). Directx10 seems all well and good, but with directx 10.1 and all the hardware prices, I'm just holding back.

The situation is very similar to when XP was released really. I'm just waiting for it to be patched & proof that it is stable enough to trust.

The idea of XP SP3 sort of makes me think I might just stick with XP aswell lol :)

I just had a look at that software :) looks pretty cool, watched a video and the way you can right, left and middle click on icons to do things seems really neat :)

Bet it takes a while to get used to tho.

Nah as I said, take the review with the biggest pinch of salt and bare some things in mind that I don`t think tom`s may have.

hmm never moaned about memory or anything on XP myself, nor did my buddies at the time cos they liked NT, and likened it`s performance too. I couldn`t comment on NT at the time as I was sticking with SE. Never had much memory then, 128 possibly 256m el cheapo pc133 or summit. (not as cheap now I don`t think)

Loved the way XP pee`d over the ME tho.

5 years we`ll be using this OS that beta`ing next year surely ?

.. Tox will have XP still tho :p

Used to moan til the cows come home about how crap 98 was in comparison to Amiga Workbench (well still do really) hehe.

hehe Amiga converted software ftw !

Btw u can get the Vista cheaper in comparison if u buy it oem at the time of getting some kit or something. U may need to get it at some point.

I never had any problems with XP when it came out.. It ran like a dream on my PIII 900Mhz and 512 SD ram! ;)

I will be looking forward to Windows 7 mind you.. main;y because it is said to have a smaller kernel. Windows 7 will sursly "pee" all over Vista. Just like how XP "peed" all over ME.

What makes me laugh at M$ even more is that the sales of XP have gone sky high since the release of Vista... mainly because of Dell. They used to only sell PCs with Vista.

They have changed that now, Good for them tbh.

So yeah, Hate Vista because it is useless software.. only "new" thing in it is DX10. And even that is disappointing. :(

WINDOWS 7 FTW! :)

Well all end up using it though for at least a year as we wont be able to keep up with latest stuff until windows 7 is released...a year or 2 overdate.

Or we can all be very clever.. and get Windows Server 2008! :)

This could be my break to the new OS.

Allowing me to have DX10 but with a more fined tuned OS.. and then I tune it some more. ;)

Meh..

I like it because it feels better. For me it is much easier to use too.

Whats 3 or 4 % in a game lol

I have been thinking of trying Vista again but cant help being reminded of when I tried it last year and it ran like a pile of $**t

I am sticking with XP till either Vista becomes "ok" or 7 comes out.

But every pc that has vista preinstalled has downgrade rights to xp free of charge?

I agree with you that server 08 is looking good. Although i'll prob only ever use it for server use.

I didn't know you could do this?

Might have to look into doing that on a few clients pc's as they have been complaining about vista :(
