Whenever i install my Windows XP Pro after several months by formating the whole system i always turn these options off and install these softwares for Max Performance.

Softwares after the Completion of Windows (Do it by Sequence):

01 Windows XP Service Pack 2

02 Dotnet Frameworks

03 Motherboard INF Files

04 DirectX 9.0c (Latest Version)

05 Sound Card Drivers

06 Monitor then 3D Card Drivers

Additional Softwares for Windows:

01 Windows Media Encoder

02 Windows Media Player 10

03 MSN Messenger 7.5 "Disable the first 3 Check Boxes in Options/General (Always use latest Version)

03 Power DVD 6 Deluxe

04 Java 5 Update 6 (Always use latest Version) http://www.java.com

05 LimeWire 4.9.33 Pro

06 Norton AntiVirus 2003 Pro (With Updated Definitions)

07 ACDSee Picture Viewer (Any version but i use the classic one v3.12)

08 Acrobat Reader 7.0 (Always use latest Version)

09 Crap Cleaner (for Cache Files "Recommended on BBC) http://www.ccleaner.com

10 DAP v7.1 (Downloading Utility)

11 WinRAR v3.3 (for File Extraction and ZIP files)

12 Flash Player and Shockwave (Always use latest Version) http://www.macromedia.com

13 DivX Pro v5.11 Player (Video Codecs)

14 Winamp for MP3 (Disable any Taskbar/Startup/Agent options during the installation)

15 Nero Burning 6

Windows Settings for Best Performance:

01 Turn off Automatic Updates (System Properties).

02 Turn off Remote Assistance (System Properties).

03 Set the wrong Date and Time (During the Installation).

04 Set "Always Hide" for Windows Security Alerts (Taskbar Properties).

05 Disable Show Clock (Taskbar Properties).

06 Disable the first 2 options in Windows Messenger Preferences.

07 Always Delete your IE Cache, Cookies and History after using Internet.

08 Uncheck "Save file and URL history in the player" in WMP's Options/Privacy.

09 Disable these options if your using Norton AntiVirus no mater what version:

1. Uncheck - Show Auto-Protect Icon in the tray.

2. Uncheck - Scan floppy disc in A: for boot viruses when shutting down.

3. Uncheck - AOL/MSN/Yahoo Messengers.

4. Uncheck - Enable automatic LiveUpdate.

5. Before Playing 3D App Uncheck - Enable Auto-Protect then "Enable it back after you Quit".

6. Download the virus definitions manually from http://www.downloads.com

Softwares like SisSoftSandra says to disable your Wallpaper and set your system settings for Best Performance in "System Properties" but believe me it does'nt effect at all you'll only gain 0.5 to 1% Performance so who cares. If your HDD file system is NTFS then it's much better. Some people will say after reading this Post that "why to set your date and time incorrect" so let me clear you this point sometimes (Not everytime) Viruses attack on present date and time. In this Post i'm not talking about any Spyware Utilities, Overclocking Utilities or other softwares cause there are billions of different softwares using all over the world and everybody has it's own choice and their using different softwares. Have you considered using Nlite to create your own windows install? It lets you create your own windows bootable iso with all the crap removed, :)

I got my windows install down to 120mb yesterday using it, though it wouldnt fare too well for 24/7 usage
