Will a mini pci-e / pci-e x1 fit in a pci-e x16 slot?

So I have the asus crosshair IV, which effectively has no actual mini-pci-e or pci-e x1 slots.

What I've read implies that the slots will automatically detect the amount of connectors in the slot. So a mini pci-e card in a full sized slot will still operate and function correctly.

What I'm looking at getting is: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132018&Tpk=xense

So I'm concerned if the included asus xense card will even function correctly on my board.

My pcie 1x souncard is in a 16x slot and it works perfectly
