Widescreen TFT Monitor

I currently have a 18.1" IBM TFT, and I feel that the time has come to upgrade.

I'm thinking about going for a widescreen monitor - I have read all the threads as they have appeared... with you folks with you Dells, and it gets me thinking: 'hmmm, is widescreen worth the extra cost?"

It makes sense, the shape of it for visual reasons. It must also be great for watching DVDs, and gaming I hear.

I was just going to go for a normal 19" TFT, I do a lot of 3D CAD work, so that will be its primary purpose. It will hopefully also be used for DVDs, TV, and games (when I get the chance!).

Any advice/ views/ recommendations?

Any thoughts on the 'Samsung SM-930BF'?



Looks like it has a fairly good spec, especially with its 4ms response, and low price tag...
 
Mate - most TFT's are good now and there are some excellent units around also - widescreen is excellent in gaming and if you wanted to watch films or TV from it too you could easily.

4ms response is good too - This dell 24" I have is 16ms and you dont notice it at all - 1600x1200 goodness is what it's all about for gaming - then it's down to brightness and contrast. I have heard good things about the Dell 20" unit too.

Widescreen is the future so fill yer boots my friend.

I'm having the same problem.

I want to buy 2 Samsung 930BF's

or

1 Dell 2407 (the new version of the 2405).

The 930BF is absolutely the best screen for gaming on the market these days, but the 2407 has so much more, programming, watching movies 16:9,...

It's a hard decission and I don't know yet what I'm going to do :)
 
If i was gonna buy any kind of monitor now or in the near future i would make sure it had HDCP on the DVI port, otherwise you wont be able to use it with bluray/hddvd drives in the future. Just my thoughts.
 
I doubt DVI without HDCP will cause problems with future bluray/HDdvd drives tbh, bonus if it has it though.

Stocky as you plan to do a lot of CAD work then one single but larger monitor would prob be best i.e dell 2405/7FPW again a bonus if you're throwing in a bit of DVD as well. Dual monitors can be extremely useful for certain applications but you can't beat the overall experience of gaming on a large monitor.

Do you have a budget in mind? Also do you think you'll be upgrading your gfx anytime soon as high res' such as 1920x1200 on the latest games can really push your gfx - if you plan on keeping your X800XT for the forseable future then you might be better off getting a couple 19"s
 
I'm thinking 20" Dell now...

I kept the 6800UE AGP in the end with my dothan in the Stacker project (will update soon!). But will probably update my mobo combo with the next lot of cards to be released - whatever they might be?!

Is the 2005FPW any good?
 
Actually it has already been stated if your video input does not have HDCP then you wont be able to watch films (bluray/hd-dvd) with that protection or view material (future broadcasts) with that protection. Sorry to say.

Woops sorry mate I didn't realise it had been confirmed, my bad. Still not really sure the point of HDDVD/Bluray when HVD would be superior - Maxell have already stated they will offer 300GB discs by the end of the year.

Stocky at the price the 2005FPW cannot be beaten however you may want to wait for the 2007FPW at the end of next month (supposedly) either to save money on a 2005FPW or buy into better screen/functions.
 
My 2005FPW arrived this morning - all I can say is WOW!

How cool is it to have the screen this wide :D

It had one blue pixel when I first turned it on, but it disappeared after about 10 seconds - I hope it was just because it was cold or something, it won't come back will it?

If it's gone now it shouldn't come back. Just run a pixel checking prog to see if you have any deads or anything. I didn't have any when I checked mine which I was so happy about :D

Your gonna love gaming with that monitor, it's amazing to say the least.

I'm still getting used to my 2005fpw,and i'm still not sure its right for me.It's good for surfing and movies and office stuff and probably most games,but my beloved bf2 doesn't look too clever.I don't appear to have any dead pixels.I think the colours ,brightness and clarity are excellent and i don't notice any ghosting,but i do have some backlight issues.If i run the black xp screensaver,all four corners of the screen seem to have a faded bloom-like effect,more noticable at the bottom.In fact i was wondering if i should return it,what do you think ?It's not easy to get a good pic,but this will give you an idea.

I would RMA it mate, there are a few out there like that. Mines got a slight purple hint when you look at it from the side but straight on it's perfect.

Lovely monitors :D

Oh and if I can find it, there is a hack for BF2 you can use to get it to true widescreen.
 
I have similar backlight problems not quite as bad but still noticable on a black screen but to be honest I dont know how often that is, after a little getting use to I find it hard to go to my wifes 17" tft
