You're better off sticking to Nvidia. Don't get me wrong, the 6870 are quick in CF, but you get no physx and no CUDA.
I know you say you don't like the shrouds, but you need to understand what amazing value for money that is mate. £220 for that kind of performance is pretty much unheard of.
The EVGA shroud you like is just a stock 460 shroud with a sticker on lol.. But yeah, leave it with me a bit I'm currently digging for you

Sooo.. My recommendations are.
1 x GTX 470 @ £150 or so. Yes they're a tad noisy but they're bloody fast and at that price are untouchable.
At the upper end, 2 x GTX 470. Will blow a 580 clean and clear out of the water. £300 ish. They also have blower coolers which are better for SLI.
Low end.
1 or 2x MSI GTX 460 1gb @ £110 each. That's where the great value is mate. The only combination there that could toss around 3d well would be SLI GTX 470. Even the 570 would struggle with 3D, should you decide later on that you want it
