Why do bad things happen to good people

i was at work on thursday morning and i sore this in the warehouse where i work,

where i work is a hub for palletised freight and obvis we use forklift trucks and this is what happens when you drive a forklift like a boy racer

the driver has broken both his legs and fractured his pelvis.

this is a warning to anyone driving a FLT then please think because this could have been you.

also if you work arround them be aware

Being a Health and Safety Rep at work i have to deal with lots of accidents but this is one of the worst i have seen for a long time

the sand was put there to soak up the engine and hydralic oil,

what happened was that another FLT driver hit him at 15mph and made the truck tip over, if the driver had been wearing his seat belt then he would have been ok.

but he wasnt
 
Yes it's an unfortunate thing, but forklifts are actually one of the leading killers in industry. Being the OH&S Rep that you are, what forms of control/risk management are you going to incorporate?

i dont think so me and the other rep at work are going to the hospital to take a formal statement of the driver who was injured, but i look like from the CCTV system that he obvis was not wearing a seat belt and that he jumped off the truck when it was falling so i dont think if he puts a claim in that he will get any money, i mean dont get me wrong if that was me i would defo put a claim in for loss of earnings.

but we will wait and see

well we have had a meeting with linde (the company that owns the FLTS) and they have said that they are fitting 5 point rally style seatbelts to the FLTS and are making a system that the FLT wont even move off untill the driver is wearing it, also they are reducing the speed of the truck down to 7mph witch i dont think is slow enough but want to i know im only a health and safety rep, the management of the company have.
 
With the weight of those things he is certainly lucky to be alive. I certainly wouldtn fancy my chances being stuck underneath one

The factory weight of the truck is 2600KGS thats without the load that it can carry.

the trucks are called H20 and can carry 2000KGS

total weight of the FLT with full load 4600KGS

You are the only OH&S Rep?:eek: :nono: How many employees? :eek: A mate of mine works for a company called SpeedShield, and they specialise in forklift safety systems. They have a mandatory 3 point checklist that the onboard computer assesses before the fork is allowed to start (seatbelt must be clicked in and a switch placed in the seat makes sure of this, fork must be in park, and the mast/tines/load must be at lowest possible position). The onboard computer automatically monitors and controls the speed according to the current weight being carried. The actual onboard computer can be completely controlled via a PDA using bluetooth.

Yeah they're only babies...around a 4 - 6 tonner
 
Ouch!!

Now starts the chain reaction and the buck passing.

The HSE will ask the company directors and management "Why wasn't he wearing his seat-belt", who will then ask the depot manager the same question, who in turn will ask the shift/line manager/supervisor, who will then ask the chargehand, who will then ask the driver, who will prolly then say "I was only going a few yards, and didn't think I needed to"

I used to be the Health and Safety officer in the carpentry workshop where I worked, and it's amazing how many employees think health and safety rules are a pain. It's also amazing how many big companys think so as well. I've been told "Oh you don't need one of those. Just get the job done, or else."

Our policy was, anyone found to be flaunting the health & safety rules were a danger to themselves and anybody else in the vecinity. "Instant Dismissal"

its not the smallest truck we have got, i think the biggest is 12-14 tons

anyway the H&S ddept at our place has 15 people working in it, 2 H&S Managers and 13 reps, all the reps are on different shifts.

same at our place too but some managers dont care about the rules all they care about is "GETTING THE JOB DONE"
 
I used to drive a forklift for a living when I was the warehouse manager for Lowes... We really never though about safety :p And winter + forklift + outside + on ice = zomg so much fun!!!

Yeah until you do something stupid and hit a dry patch then woops
