Who said macs don't get viruses? :D

I think it's more of a case of people not bothering to write viruses and such for Mac OS X because so many of the world's PCs run on Windows

yeah I own a mac, and i used to sell macs and I never reduce it to such simple terms as they never get virus's

they are a lot harder to write them for, and with the potential reward so much smaller no one really bothers

I heard somewhere that mac book air can also be hacked and you can change the voltages so the battery explodes. as with the apparently secure operating system that's a load of crap if anything is less secure than a windows computer.

Im not saying they don't get viruses.. its just what people say to me when they get a Mac

They definitely can get them but when every single Virus or Worm for the Mac makes headlines it kind of shows you how small the problem is. When was the last time there was a news post about a Windows Virus? In the time it takes for 1 Mac virus to be made there are 100,000 made for Windows.

So although saying they don't get them is false it's a bit like saying England has no gun crime. Of course there are a few occasions but we are no where near the scale of say America that has legal firearms for all and a lot more crimes involving them.

I guess the Mac platform is growing a lot more now though, due to iPhone users wanting everything to sync a lot easier and what not.

So maybe we'll see an increase in Mac viruses?

Until recently, what was the point in creating malicious software for a Mac? To steal pretty pictures? I have seen plenty of viruses for OS X over the years and am sure we will see more. But I do believe due to the latest fashions, OS X will get targetted more due to its popularity increasing (for no good reason... apart from fantastic marketing lies).

Use Linux people...

(for no good reason... apart from fantastic marketing lies)..

And fantastically well built laptops, and great UI features, the best multitouch features i've seen on any pc, and (call me shallow) the prettiest pieces of kits out there.

If PC manufacturers could just get the trackpad right I'd buy one. But until then I'll keep my MacBook Pro.

Johnny Dude is right when he says they have the best multitouch features. But it isn't just that, it is basic scrolling and moving the mouse which is excellent.

Are we talking about two finger scrolling? My Thinkpad does it just as well.

I do agree that the laptops have a lovely chassis (not keen on the looks) but they are strong. Hardware-wise they are overpriced Dells to me. Anywho, all my comments are aimed at the OS and not the hardware as the hardware is just a PC. If we were having this convo ten years ago when Apple were using the PowerPC architecture it would be a different story.

I've not used a thinkpad for a long time but I've used recent Asus, Dell and HP notebooks and their trackpads all sucked.

yeah, it's not just 2 finger scrolling, it's pinch to zoom that actually works, 3 finger swipes to switch between applications and desktop environments and many other, thats why i said multitouch not single touch

i've seen plenty of PCs try and do this, and they all sucked at it

They do get viruses, and have for a while, but most have been basically nothing / fixed straight away. They're bound to get more at some point.

I don't really mind. I use my PC a lot without anti-virus protection, and rarely have any problems, I turn it on and check once in a while, but as long as I don't be silly, and make sure I know exactly what I'm downloading/installing, it's fine!

As for the Macbook itself, I've never come across a laptop that has been as well built as my Macbook pro. I know it's expensive, but I need a laptop that is sturdy, that I can carry around with me EVERYWHERE and that runs Logic Pro - as that's my main DAW.

If I have any problems with it, I can go straight into the store and ask them what the problem is (If I don't already know) and get it sorted out straight away. My first Macbook was almost completely replaced within the three years that I had the warranty, so when it ran out of warranty, it was almost like a new machine.

The education discount definitely helps though.

Sometimes it is unavoidable and without an AV you will never know if you have one.

If it is a trojan you will probably know, but something more subtle like a keylogger can be very dangerous and hard to detect without a scanner.

Yeah, I know... I still turn it on every few days to check, so it's not like it's permanently off.

It's my fault if I do have a problem anyway!
