Who has got a Commando?

I would like to hear about your honest user opinions of this board, as I am now on number 3 and to be honest, I hate it.

Good points;

It overclocks well (see also bad points).

Nicely laid out (see also bad points).

Bad Points;

Doesnt recover well from a bad overclock (mine havent).

Angled sata ports - I'm not sure why these have caught on, but I find them really fiddly, and if you have giant sausage fingers and shovel hands, not ideal.

Fussy about PSUs - Didnt like the Enermax Galaxy, or the replacement, had serious reboot issues (Dead, wouldnt post).

Ill fitting heatpipe assembly that doesnt make contact with the northbridge.

And the most irritating thing is the whistling noise that it makes under load at moderate to high FSB.

As I said, I've had 3 of these in the last week, and all have been the same. Anyone else have similar issues, or have you got a good one?, if so, where from?

Thanks :)

Put it this way mate, its the best of the worst.

I've had every high-end conroe board on the market now and the Commando is the one I've had the most success with.

Agreed on the poor recovery from overclock (but at first I didn't realise that you needed to enable the CMOS reset button via a jumper)

I prefer the angled ports tbh.

I've tried mine with about 5 different PSU's and all have been OK. But I've not tested with with a Galaxy.

Agreed on the heatpipe. The NB block sits wonky on the core.

No whistling here :s

Got one out of its box earlier, I must admit it looks very nice, the onboard buttons are a godsend and that LCD screen on the back is pretty cool ;) Not overclocked it yet though

I think it definately has the potential to be the best, but so far, I prefer the P5B deluxe, mainly because of the whistling/chirping/buzzing of the commando.

Overclocking wise, almost identical clocks to my P5B, but with slightly lower voltages, so thats a bonus.

Cmos jumper got me at first, but I have since had situations where, after a bad overclock, the cmos wouldnt clear, which is quite irritating.

Thanks mate :)

The lcd screen is pretty helpful, once you get a hang of what some of the messages signify. I reckon, it wouldnt have cost them much to include a long wire and a plastic housing for that, so you could have it on your desk if you are using the board in a case.

Yeah the P5B Dlx was a great no frills board with loads of OC potential. I had quite a lot of problems with mine, but then it was one of the very first and I think they have released a revised one since.

Mines an early rev 1.0, not had any probs, so looks like the legendary asus hit and miss syndrome :D

what are your thoughts on the QuadGT v Commando then?

No, the QuadGT isn't (yet) perfected either - it is solid for me though & whistling certainly isn't a complaint.

I'm genuinely interested if someone has run both.

I know of a few people that have run P5B Deluxes & said that they prefer the QuadGT but I can't currently think of someone (other than perhaps someone like Gary Key) that may have run both.

Similarly, I will be interested to see the opinions of someone that has run both the P5N-E SLI & the FP-IN9 SLI (& the MSI for that matter).

I'm just gonna drop a quick 2 cents in here on this one...

I've used about every high-end Conroe board on the market as well (excluding the 680i boards, never had a go with them) and I finally decided to give the D975XBX2 a shot and wow, it clocks well and it's uber stable. Highly recommended in my book.

After re-NBsinking the P5N-E SLI it was faily solid before my PSU decided it was due to meet its maker.

Yeah you can't really go wrong with an Intel made board,

Strangely, I got a new Commando today after making the mistake of selling my old one and the northbridge core is actually almost twice the size of my old one! Wonder what they've changed :/

Surely the 965 chipset wont have doubled in size:confused:

That's why I was extremely confused. Basically I got my Swiftech heatsink out (which had only previously been used on the other Commando) and the thermal paste square left on the base was much smaller than the area of the NB core.

where is your PCB made?

so far, there has been so much crap doing the rounds saying ' high load = high pitch sound ' some can clock to XXXFSB, some cant even with same CPU ' etc etc

and the bit thats giving me the headach, its there are 2 place making commando boards.

China

Taiwan

reviews done by mags, online forums, seems to have PCB made in Taiwan.

only seen some people who bought it from shop has PCB made in China (yes, thats me)

now, seeing how much crap China can make, im sure that could mean people with PCB made in china = crap board = RMA soon = stab self with commando heatpip = never use Asus again. (note, i said [COULD MEAN], im not saying everything from China is crap, my P5WD2 is made in china, and its still going strong)

if anyone on here who owns a commando, post up your OC results, when did you bought it, where your PCB is made, so we can see if there is really a quality problem.

Thanks for this post, I was gonna order the Commando last night till I saw Newegg has a NO Refund policy on them. This thread just reinforces my thought to go like Frag said to 975 BX2.

Honestly I cant take a chance the heart of my comp will be junk.

I really miss when stuff was made in Japan:(
