Which to get?

hey,

i can either get an opty 150 and a 7800gt or a 4600 x2 and my x800. Both would go under my mach, which would be better for general use?

Thanks

Justin

Well as far as i know and going on what you said to me, your not that much of a gamer so the x2 would be a better option.

Well under phase the opty's a much better option cause it'll make the most of the mach as it has an fx core and should clock to at least 3.4Ghz whereas the x2 will only clock to around 3.1Ghz. Also not many programs are multithreaded at the moment so the x2 won't have much to make up for the speed loss. So unless you do serious multitasking or assign processes to each manually (which I don't think you'll do well at as a bit of a n00b - no offence intended) then there's not much benefit in the second core. Also 7800GTs are good cards and leave you with an SLi upgrade option if you do start gaming in a few years on hardcore graphics intesive games.

I agree with Gollum the opty route will be better option for now maybe next year when dual core games come out.You can upgrade to one then.

It's true you could get higher overclocks with an Opteron, but only if your motherboard/ram allows you to go to high FSB of 300Mhz or if you drop in a ram divider which = performance hit.

An FX under phase cooling (like my FX55) will allow you and overclock of 3.5Ghz+ with adjustable multiplier allows you to employ a more easily achieved FSB of 255-275Mhz (most DFI's will reach this FSB) - Which is also the sweet spot for BH5 RAM.

I`ve always taken it that once I get past 300, I can put the RAM on a divider, and I can hold my tight timings and a good frequency, and still have the high CPU speed. its not as easy to tune as an FX to always get the best of all settings, but it aint bad.

Only holdback is the memory controller when it gets cold...

He's got TCCD and 150 has a 12x so he can go to at least 3.6Ghz with no divider. Also fx55 costs way more for same performance (under phase with TCCD).

Unless you buy one from a trusted EPUK guy for the price of a 150 with guaranteed performance ;) - I doubt you'll see 300*12 on an Opty it's right on the limit IMHO

I know - I'm just saying he won't need a divider. But he does have me to help him clock so anything's possible. :p

I think you are getting a bit off track boys!!

people will also try and sell at a profit if they have good clockers ;)

Meaning your looking to find a good clocking Opteron and make a profit?

Also £265 is a goodprice are you sure they're skt939? What mobo are you using?

they are socket 939, i mean people sell their cpus in general at a profit if they are amazing clockers.

Not true I seen one instance and did not work - sure they have a right to charge a small premium over the norm if it proves to be a good clocker.

Take my FX55 for example - it overclocks better than most FX57's (as good as most week16's too) being that it does that and it's proven (meaning no risk for the buyer) then it's okay to pay a little over the 'going rate' but profit - no chance......... unfortunately.
