Which psu for £50-70

Basically my 480watt tagan went bang with a huge flash, took out the breaker & caught fire inside (lots of smoke)

So I'm looking for a new psu as my spare 525w hiper doesn't have the 8pin EPS connector for the mobo

I've been looking at the reviews on here and at first was going to get the "Silverstone Zeus 850w ST85ZF Quad SLI PSU" for £66

The only downside was that it doesn't have the 8pin pcie and also it only has a 80mm fan

I notice a lot of people rate the corsair psu's as they use good components (105˚C caps etc) so I thought maybe get a Corsair VX550W as I've read it's actually the same as their 650W PSU internally.

The silverstone has quad rails, ocz dual rails and corsair single rail

Completely ignore the picture, the seller is a bloody retard. What you actually get is an 80+ 1000w Delta PSU (of server fame).

If you don't want to spend that much try this one. Again ignore the pic, I have bought three of these now. 80+ certified Delta 750w.

Those PSUs are pre Dell. They were originally ordered by Alienware and are listed on the 80+ site.

I've bought three for £25 a pop. Go on, tell me where you can get an 80+ cert PSU for £25?

I've also had three chassis from them at £50 a pop. Infact no, the first one had a scratch so full refund and the second I only paid for one.. Daft sods ! bus stop Alienware chassis. You wait for one and two come at once

I rate Dell about as highly as I rate governments, politicians and banks. Best not to even go down that road

The original Alienwares were basically computers you would build yourself with all of the best most expensive parts you would use in a sexy chassis. Trust me mate, when you work 12 hour days in I.T the last thing you want to do is come home and bloody build a computer. Money isn't the issue then, time is. Alienware were successful because of that tbh.

Edit. I know what you mean with the Tom thing. Alienware were basically a bunch of Toms when they started out. They really gave a sh*t about their customers. And that's why when they sold to Dell and within 2 years Dell had flunked they decided to make a comeback. I mean why not? You fool a company into thinking that the only reason people buy from you is your case, watch them mess it all up and then return.

And Dell will lose again, mark my words.

I saw those alienware ones with the pic of an old AT psu and just thought it was where someone was trying to scam people.

Do the alienware ones come with the 8pin EPS connector?

Can't seem to find much info about them, might end up getting a new psu for the warranty.

XS give a 90 day warranty.

They come with a 24 pin power connector, 8 pin power connector, 4 pin power connector, two sets of 6 pin PCIE (if you need an 8 you can buy adapters for next to nothing) and so on. Everything is braided too

Went to pcworld to see what they had for a laugh and they had a highpower 650watt (badged 80plus) for £90, read the info on the box and it says 80% efficiency at 50% load surely that's not how the 80plus certification works?

Is your top image of the 1000w and bottom image the 750w?

The image I have listed is the 750w mate.They're both the same PSU in two different computers.. One mine, one my cousins I also have a spare sitting under my bed haha. Fookin £40 delivered? would be bloody rude not to You would only EVER need 1kw for Tri fire or triple SLI.

Newton could well be the manu. I know Alienware used a mixture of Newton 1KW and the Deltas. The pictures you have found are exactly the same as the one I have fitted. It's not completely modular though,take note of that. The entire loom does unclip though so you can clean it out and defuzz without removing all of your wiring.

Spec for money and 80+ you would pay double the £44.99 they want shipped to your door.

As I say, I have used XS a bloody lot. Three Alienware chassis, two PSUs (one for me and one for my cousin when he made his PC into a gaming rig) aswell as a pair of Dell XPS/Turtle beach Earforce. And they're always very reasonably priced. The Earforce I have are about £150 and I got them and a full flight cased Dell toolkit with a beanie and lazer pen for £45 delivered.

I don't know why they haven't had anything new for ages, but I would imagine the Dell plant are all cleared out now of anything from the original Alienware. That's why they're in Ireland see, their warehouse is about 5 miles from the Dell plant

Oh and also note the green power on LED and safety shutout? The PSU has a inbuilt power breaker. Again, not something you would get on a cheap tinny PSU. Talking of cheap and tinny, do bear in mind that thing weighs about a ton lol. It's incredibly solid and well built

The 1kw I am not sure on tbh. I know as I said that they used Newton mainly for their 1kw but I do know the ALX (the original badass one I have) did have a different PSU in that was 1kw and had a billet plaque on the side that had ALX engraved on it. See pic. Alienware also used Hipro (which I run in my main rig on account of the fets and transformer) but those things are beasts and almost double the size of a regular PSU

So the 1kw is a bit of a lottery tbh. The fact is seems to have a Delta part code on it is reassuring, but would you ever even need that kind of power?

One last thing.. Sorry mate I'm super busy today as I have visitors coming.. 80% @ 50% load is about right. Think about it like this.... When you are idling or say browsing the web your components are drawing bugger all power. Less than 50% (use the thermaltake calculator and see). It's then that you want the PSU to be efficient. If it wasn't then you would be losing loads of money in heat and wasted power. Obviously when you load the PC with games or something the PSU is far more efficient because you are using a lot more of the power it can produce and using more toward the max power output and draw. It's when a 750w PSU idles and eats that much from the socket you have a problem

I've ordered one of the alienware 750w ones as they are only £45

Don't think I'll be needing 1000w for a long time as my system comes up as around 400watts using the calculator thing. Just wanted to get something that will last for upgrades etc.

Cool beans. Yeah they're a very solid supply in all honesty. I'm using one in my silver rig and I have a Phenom 9950 (aka 65nm greedy bastard ) 3gb ram, pair of 250gb baras, water cooling, about 8 fans, 3870x2 (you can literally see the needle spin on the meter with that thing ) an optical, a Silverstone MFP etc etc and the PSU doesn't even break a sweat
