Which Mobo for a IB build?

hey guys

looking at making a new i7 IB PC.

Question is which mobo to go for? I hear theres a RoG board due?

Primarily want a good overclocking board (but also one that looks nice is a bonus!)

Thanks for any suggestions!

What kind of colour scheme are you going for? The MSI Z77 GD65 is overall the best board out there atm, it can OC better than a Asus Z77 Deluxe and is £50 less than the Asus. If you want something red then yes the Maximus V Extreme is meant to be released sometime this month or next month, so you could wait for that. Or there's the Gigabyte G1 Sniper 3, awesome looking green and black board, and the ASRock Extreme's are black with hints of gold which also look good.

Overall though, the best all round board on sale currently is the MSI GD65

Oh, and what's your budget?

budget is probably around £300 mark.

I dont want to compromise board ability for colour so ill match to whatever the mobo is i get, probably red or green would be good as ive always had blue/black till now

In that case i'd wait for the G1 Sniper 3 or Maximus V Extreme to be released. Both will be insane boards and they look amazing

I'm also buying a new mobo and I have a hafx, but the nvidia edition, so it would look better if I bought the sniper3. The problem is the price dif between the sniper3 and the GD65. Is the sniper3 worth all that money?

yeah, I wonder why it wasn't discussed more, or even reviewed. Since its in a gaming category board, I was expecting more hype around it.

all the motherboards pretty much do the samething. some offer a lil more memory support,

gadgets and softwares and thats what the dollar differences are. for the high-end its usually

liscensing and advertising, but in some cases more phase-power more softies and color

schemes. really mega more dollars for different colors. are you a member of ROG? then this is

your board.. if not.. monies can be spent for better items, for my opinion.

Would have to say the p8z77 deluxe or wait for the full rog board. the reason I would go Asus over others(besides really liking Asus in general) is the memory traces use a next gen standard allowing for higher mem ocing. watch the video on newegg jj explains it all pretty well. the software included with the Asus make fan controls and in windows ocing very easy and works well. I think you will find every option you would need for ocing your ivy to the max without going for a ln ocing record. just an fyi about fan controles. to control the cpu fan headers you need 4 pin pwm fans or it defaults to full speed. all other fans can be controlled though voltage or pwm(3 pin or 4 pin)

It's a unusual suggestion but you might want to have a look at the asus P8Z77 WS

if the ocing featurs are there its a great choice as well.(not sure on this one but I think they are). do some reading on the asus site for that one to find out for sure. mb manual software choices ect.

Z77 Deluxe is overpriced. The MSI GD65 is just as good at overclocking and has almost all the features the deluxe has for £50 less. Plus all the new Z77 boards can take memory at much higher clocks, it's the new memory controller in the Ivy Bridge chips, it's not just Asus boards

yes the memory controller is key but given the choice I personally prefer the better memory traces and more so the extra software. for me it was worth the extra price. not to mention the built in wifi/ap/packet control. the fan xpert and windows ocing software is also top notch. At the end of the day im sure the oc will end up the same on either so it really all comes down to what software/hardware features you prefer vs price.

edit btw asus claims to hit 2400 ddr3 speeds on all the p8z77 boards and 3400 on rog in the lab with ivy. lol I don't suppose it means much in extra performance but its there if you want it.

So you'd pay £50 extra for a bit of software? It's just not worth is at all. Plus the MSI looks better imo, and it claims to be able to hold RAM at 2667MHz (it's overkill i know lol)

The difference in price means little to me to have all the features I want. its not just software its also hardware. the built in wifi for example. I run mine as a 24/7 server/game platform/business ws so I can use the wifi as an ap point and control the packets for the entire network ensuring I have everything prioritized correctly and secured as well. you can use qos in a router but the asus software gives you much better control. not sure what the power phases are like on the msi but asus has 16 for cpu 2 for memory and 4 for the i-gpu giving your parts very stable power. trouble code panel and trouble leds on mb showing exactly where/what a problem is. And the ability to flash the bios without a cpu or memory installed is great if you ever need it or have a bad flash. there is more as you look deeper at the two. you get what you pay for but still I agree that you should only pay for what you want to get.

no doubt the MSI GD65 is a fine choice for some and offers a lot for the price but it all boils down to what you want in terms of hardware and software. I mean you could just buy the cheapest z77 that allows ocing if price is your main concern(or even z75 or older) but the most feature rich z77 platform right now in both hardware and software is the deluxe or ws model by asus.
