Which GTX970?...

Hey guys,

So I was wondering, how would you guys say that the EVGA GeForce GTX970 compares to the ASUS GTX970 Strix in terms of noise?...

As I know that the Strix have this fan mode, which the fans doesn't even turn on untill some load on the GPU and is off when idling.

And since I've seen some posts that some people aren't a fan of EVGA cards... thought I would ask anyway :)

Thanks,
Chrazey

Yup def the Strix or an MSI.

Generally people are fans of EVGA cards and they have a great warranty. However recently the quality of their products seems to be slacking in my opinion

I have 2 evga gtx 970 sc acx in sli and mine have been great got the backplates and revised bios and haven't had one problem and they run faster than others (standard clock speeds )and over clock insanely

now I no people have been moaning over coil noise but mines fine and its all a quiet build as well but on any of 970 range there are people moaning on coil whine

but all I can do is go off what I have and they are great ive set up a fan curve has zero fan doesn't work til 60 degrees and I like less heat generated in my case so with fan curve bf4 hits around 58-60 degrees (ultra) with 45-50% fan

So from you that has the actual cards, is there any kind of feature like the ASUS Strix card has, the Zero Fan mode... which basically makes the fan not spin untill the card gets some heavy duty load on it?...

Hey again guys, sorry for double posts here... but was just wondering, which graphics card is better in terms of video editing, rendering, photoshop and 3D in photoshop cs6?...

AMD R9 290 or GTX970?...

Thanks

depends if you are able to use your cuda cores for this stuff or opencl

Yeah, I was thinking regarding cuda cores for nvidia... but what is opencl though and how these 2 are in relation to all of these different applications I just mentioned, that I have no knowledge of unfortunately

I meant openGL not CL
easy said, Nvidia has cuda cores which can be used in programms who are cuda compatible
Amd has stream processors which can be used with opengl compatible programms

You were right to compare CUDA with OpenCL, they are both GPU compute APIs.

You were right the first time.. OpenCL.

Nvidia uses Cuda. Cuda supoprted software will benefit. AMD uses OpenCL. It will beat any Nvidia GPU on CL last i checked. OpenCL apps are very very efficient on AMD gpu's.

OpenGL is used by both. It favors Nvidia cards typically.

Whaaat?... I'm confused, so what is the difference between OpenCL and OpenGL?...

And depends on software?... well Photoshop CS6 Extended (foremost, with 3D in it) and Sony Vegas Pro 11 then? :)

Thanks guys :)

Both support the OpenCL standard. Better off with AMD. Look up articles to make sure you have the proper settings to ensure you are using the GPU as much as possible.

OpenGL: (Open Graphics Library) is a cross-language, multi-platform application programming interface (API) for rendering 2D and 3D vector graphics. The API is typically used to interact with a graphics processing unit (GPU), to achieve hardware-accelerated rendering.

OpenCL: Open Computing Language is a framework for writing programs that execute across heterogeneous platforms consisting of central processing units (CPUs), graphics processing units (GPUs), digital signal processors (DSPs), field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and other processors.

Look things up in google before asking simple questions. You might learn something more and understand things better. This is what leads to productive chats that helps others in the future.

Fair enough... usually when I've looked similar things up, I've not understood what it says :/

Well,
traditionally photoshop et all has been better with Nvidia and well, it still is. However they'll probably move towards more AMD friendly stuff as currently apple use AMD cards and they tend to cater more towards mac then windows.

Basically you can either get a 970 and take a small risk it'll move to something which works much better on AMD cards OR get an AMD card and hope they drop cuda.

I'm living in the past it seems.

From Adobe's site:
The Mercury Graphics Engine (MGE) represents features that use video card processor, or GPU, acceleration. In Photoshop CS6, this new engine delivers near-instant results when editing with key tools such as Liquify, Warp, Lighting Effects, and the Oil Paint filter. The new MGE delivers unprecedented responsiveness for a fluid feel as you work.

MGE is new to Photoshop CS6 and uses both the OpenGL and OpenCL frameworks. It does not use the proprietary CUDA framework from nVidia.

So basically AMD is a better idea than I first thought. Still I'd personally wait to see what they chuck out with the new generation.

If you do video editing in Sony Vegas stick with AMD, OpenCL is much faster than Cuda when it comes to rendering in Vegas.

When I had a 290 it would render (for example) a 10min 1080p .mp4 vid with a 50mbs bitrate in around 10-15 minuets using OpenCL. With my 970 using Cuda it takes like an hour.... Good job I don't do a lot of video rendering :p
Don't know how well Cuda works vs OpenCL with Adobe stuff though as i've never used it.

As for which 970 to get, i'd say the MSI because I have one and it is awesome.
Although, I have been hearing good things about this one

That is why i said AMD. OpenCL is becoming more popular as it is a standard and not proprietary tech.

Quite a big difference i would say! Looks like Cuda is starting to turn into PhysX?

Lol... so now I'm starting to question my decision to go for the ASUS 970 Strix and maybe get the 290.
Although it's an older card and not as powerful, power efficient which in return doesn't create as much as heat, than the newer 970  ...

Not that far gone yet. Its been much more successful then physX ever was.

Just get the 970 seeing as you're not building a rig for just photoshop. OpenCL wise, its on par with a 290x.
