Which Graphics Card upgrade

I have up to £200 for a new GPU (hopefully wife permiting), but I am stuck on what to get.

My system is i5 750 2.6, 4gb Ram and 8800 GTS (320mb)

I am unsure as to whether I should go for ATI or Nvidia, I have been looking at the latest 460 reviews and also the ATI 5850 any advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers

If the 5850 drops in price then do it. Obviously it's the better card but at the current pricing to performance the 460 wins, barely (1gb version of course).

Yeah with talk of ATI 6xxx by november it may be worth just holding off a little. I also need to consider teh power drain of the cards as apparently nvidia is a bit high. ??

the 460 not so much mate tbh. It's the 465 470 and 480 that will make the needle on your meter spin

Honestly the 460 is a fantastic card but I checked OCUK earlier (I'm sure it was there !) and saw a 5850 on a daily special for £205. Which makes it pretty much price for price with the 460 1gb.

See now for £205 with two games that's pretty darn mouth watering. Infact... Cheapest 460 1gb I can find ATM is £189. So that's £16 for Stalker call of Pripyat, Stormrise (whatever the heck that is lol) and less power consumption*

*I think. I can't remember the exact figures now. So it would seem ATI have already responded.

thats if u wanna piss about gettin hacked drivers where its just install the card boot install the 460 drivers, open nvidia control panel and set your 8800gt to physx done

Dude, you install the radeon, plug in the nvidia, install the driver and run a two second patch. Done.

I didn't realise you don't even need to enable physx in the control panel because its forced on by default. As such it takes no longer than setting up a second card for physx with an Nvidia.

I think the needle is swinging to 5850 and as has already been said ATI seem to be responding to the 460 I am just wondering if they will drop prices soon now?

Who ATI? I would doubt it. The 5850 is the better and cooler card. £205 with at least £25 worth of free games is a bargain in anyone's books tbh.

And Nvidia are not really in a position to drop the prices on Fermi because they've hardly even got off the start and it owes them millions upon millions.

See also : Sega and the Dreamcast. And look where they ended up.

I'm in the same boat coming from a 8800GTS 640MB. Today I ordered a 1GB EVGA GTX 460 SC! 3800MHz GDDR5, GPU 763MHz, ShaderClock 1526MHz @ stock

.

Best exhaust system (all going out back) and 10 year warranty!

I would say get the 460 1gb. Later you can get another and have better performance than the 5870 in CFX with the SLi set-up. More bang for your buck.

Wife is on standby, I am even getting her interested in GPUs as I am explaining the differences so she can make a "sort of" informed decision when she gives me the money, that way she will know it has not been wasted and all those nights I spend upstairs alone on my PC were worth it. God I love being married
