Which Case and PSU to get? Opinions - Please advise :)

Hey guys,

I am new to the forum. I work in IT and I have built a computer a while back, now, I want to create something new.

I am looking to have it serve as both, a personal everyday computer, along as an NAS.

I have 4-5 x 4TB Seagate drives = 16-20TB
I would want to have about 16-32GB Ram

I have seen in one of the youtube videos about the 850w NZXT PSU so just wanted to know if those are any good or not, and if there is anything better, please advise :)

I would also need a case. I do not like anything alien looking or anything too eye catchy. Just something fairly simply. I have seen a few Fractal cases which I might be interested but not sure as of yet. I got all my info from youtube as of now in regards to which parts are decent.

Please advise me on your opinions :)

I know that all the answers are going to depend on my budget, so lets say budget is high so that I can get the BEST suggestions, but afterall my budget would not be high but I think I might be able to find many bits and pieces for cheaper.

Please advise :)

Welcome, I'm new too!
850W is overkill for most setups, especially as you haven't mentioned having a graphics card. If you aren't planning on having a graphics card then a 400W or even less would be sufficient. A 430W be quiet! Pure Power would be perfect and would allow you to add a low power graphics card later down the line.
If you just want a functional, simple case then the Fractal Design R4 can't be beaten. It has simple stylish looks, loads of hard drive bays and has sound proofing to keep your build quiet.
Hope this helped :)

Definitely did help. I am planning on getting a graphics card, but did not want to include anything about that in this forum since this is Cases and PSU lol

I pretty much want a list of the best, most top of the line stuff to throw in my build and then go from there to see where I can cut a few corners by getting something less then the best you know.

What graphics card do you plan on getting or do you want help with that too? It makes a big difference on what wattage power supply to get.

As I said, I have not built a computer in a WHILE! LOL But I want to build one for personal performance and as an NAS. But I do NOT know which parts are top of the line and recommended. I want something that I can have for a while. Whether it be gaming (even tho im not a gamer) but I like to have the option haha

So high performance but not too silly? I could go all out and design you a £5000 build but I'm guessing that's too much haha. If you could just give a rough estimate of your budget it would help a lot.

One more question sorry, are you going to be doing any 3D work, rendering, editing or anything of that nature?

Done!

CPU: Intel Core i7-3770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($229.99 @ Microcenter) Very powerful CPU, isn't needed for gaming but will give you flexibility in the future.
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($24.99 @ Newegg) Good budget CPU cooler, will allow you to achieve a moderate overclock, 4.5GHz at least.
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($144.99 @ Newegg) Solid board, nothing else to say.
Memory: Samsung 8GB (2 x 4GB ) DDR3-1600 Memory ($39.99 @ Newegg) x2 Amazing memory, all kits can hit 2133MHz. If you want 32GB then I'll find another kit to use but 16GB is enough for pretty much everything.
Storage: Crucial M4 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($117.98 @ NCIX US) Fast and reliable, use this for putting your OS and programs on.
Storage: Western Digital Red 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive ($149.99 @ NCIX US) x5 I've opted for these instead of the Seagates because they are designed to be used in NAS boxes or RAID arrays.
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 3GB Video Card ($309.99 @ Newegg) Great card, will play pretty much any game maxed with 4x AA at 1080p.
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 (Black Pearl) ATX Mid Tower Case ($100.49 @ NCIX US) Solid case. Plenty of room for all the hardware, good looks and it's quiet.
Power Supply: Corsair Enthusiast 650W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($89.99 @ Newegg) Powers stuff!
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHOS104-06 Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Drive ($34.98 @ Newegg) Blu-ray and DVD reader.
Total: $1883.33

One thing you need that I haven't included is a RAID controller, just go on Newegg or whatever retailer you want to use and get an 8-port RAID controller, you can get a decent one for about $150 :)

Thanks man, Ill take a look at all of those...

The HDDs are the only thing that I will stick to keeping because I am more of a Seagate fan then Western Digital, dont know why :) Plus they are 4TB each and I just cant remember if I have 4 or 5. I currently have 4 in my Seagate Blackarmor NAS, 2 of them under Raid 1 and 2 just Spanning

If I opt out of the HDDs and stick with my own, the price isnt very bad and I am sure I can find it even at better prices maybe. So since I just saved $750 or so, give or take, what are the better models or higher end stuff that I can get from the list you provided me :)

so everything else is pretty much top notch? I I have an extra $750 or so to play with since im opting out of the WD Drives, so I dont mind using the $750 to improve other components :)

You could go with a 6-core CPU for example but there's no need because it would just be a waste of money for what you're doing. The i7 I selected is probably already overkill. Use the money for some surround sound speakers, a new monitor or something.

LOL got a pretty good sound system as is lol Monitor, maybe, not sure which one yet tho...

I want to be able to watch 3d movies on the comp, do i need a special rom and monitor?

Another questions if I may :) How about the Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E CPU Cooler? would that one be much better and be future proof incase I want to upgrade something to be more powerful?

You need a 3D capable monitor yes, something like the ASUS VG278H. You would also need an Nvidia card because they have the best 3D cabablity, the GTX 670 or 680 would suite you fine. As for the CPU cooler, yes the Thermalright Silver Arrow is better and if you want to push your CPU as far as you can then go for it.

Great :) ... What about best case fans? I am assuming I would need a few of them. Two in front maybe, one or two on top, and one or two on the back.

There's many many good case fans out there, it's very hard to decide between them. The fans that come with the Fractal Design R4 are actually fairly good, it comes with one in the front and one in the rear. If you want the best performance then pick up three 120mm Noctua NF-F12s or 120mm Scythe Gentle Typhoons which are regarded as the best fans. You only need three fans, if you want to add more you have to take out the sound dampening foam which makes the case look wierd and makes it noisier.

Yea i was checking out the Noctua ones but they are UGLY lol I mean i dont really care, but I wish they were black with like a white rim so that IF i do decide to add some lights into the case, so it looks nice with the white rim... I guess I am sh!t out of luck on that lol

Will this setup also allow me to DUAL BOOT into MACOSX? My girlfriend only likes MAC OS so I figured I would kill two birds with one stone. I know that I said the comp will act as an NAS, but for those few times that she will use it, I dont mind shutting down.
