Which cable to DIY extend the ATX connectors?

I thought I'd tidy up the cabling when I pull apart the computer soon to fit a waterblock, so will extend some of the PSU cables (specifically I'm thinking of the 4 pin 12v one, but might do the large 24 pin one too).

I have a soldering iron and heat shrink wrap, so it's not a problem. I'm just unsure of which cable I need to order, looking on my PSU I cant see anything written on the individual cables.

How much wattage will be pulled across various components? I know the voltages to the mobo etc are low 12 or 5v `ish etc., though I'm just unsure on the exact cable. Clearly I dont want the wrong type!

Here's a link to MAPLIN, can anyone in the know please say which :worship: I was thinking of the 32/0.2 or the 24/0.2 'equipment wire?'.

In terms of votages/currents, ur psu `should` hint at this on the sticker on it`s side.

I did look into buying components from Maplins for something like this, then found that Akasa (I think) make sets of these that cost a fair price compared with component costs and time spent. They size 15cm or 30cm in length iirc.

However u don`t get the satisfaction of knowing u did it urself ;)

(and posting pics of how u did it)

I did find THIS premade item, also from maplin, would do the job just fine i guess :)

Just realised they dont seem to sell the cut cables in 1 meter lengths like they used to, so would have to order 10 meters.. Maybe I'll just get the premade too :P Either that or take the PSU to a store and ask there.

Probably be cheaper to buy a £15 el cheapo psu, hack the power connector off and stick ur own socket on. Although last time I checked, Maplins didn`t sell the socket cheaply.

Of course this will void ur warranty, lol :p

I figured u meant this for the main connector, and searching similarly u`d find the 4 pin or 8pin. 8pin is a bit harder to find, although Kustompc sell them I think.

They`re priced around 4-6 pound, which is... fair enough I guess. Tack on the 6-10 pound postage and it seems silly.

why not just buy extension cables :?
I really dont think they'd be long enough, the cable needs to take the long way round - I cant route it behind the mobo.

More I think on it though, the more I think I'll just stump up this once and get a selection of cables in various ratings and colours, and just make my own cables for fans and psu's etc as and when I need them in the future.

4 quid, plus postage etc, for a simple 4pin plug, wish I could print money like that, might aswell spend a bit more now and be sorted for good custom cable wise :)

Thanks for the links Rastalovich.

I thought I'd close this thread as it were, with info I have found out, in case anyone in future might want the info too.

Turns out the internal cabling off an Enermax PSU I had knockling about in a box is 18AWG, which is the USA cabling standard, for metric, the 18AWG cable would be called 19/02.

Here is a link to a table to covert AWG into metric.

maplin.co.uk do a 24/02 which would be fine for extending the cabling for the molex ATX connectors to the motherboard, which is just what I need! (though sods law at the moment they dont have it in stock, only on 100m reels!).
