Which 2011 motherboard???

Hi all,

Need some advice, looking at going for a i7 3820 for the moment with a possible view to upgrade to a 3930k down the line. Now I have spend much time looking at various motherboards. I do love the Rampage IV Extreme however don't think I would use it to its full potential and the cost is a fair bit more compared to other boards.

I have got it down to 3 boards but I would like some advise as to which would be best.

- Asus P9X79 Pro
- Asus P9X79 Duluxe
- Gigabyte GA-X79-UD5

They all come around a similar price point, and offer similar features. Now I have heard about Gigabytes RMA support being better in the UK than Asus's. I have used both Asus and Gigabyte UEFI BIOS and like them both in different ways, so no preference there.

So the question really is which one would you go for and why? and If there is any users of the above boards could you post to let me know how you are getting on with them?

Cheers in advance. :)

Ive got the Pro in Interim and had no issues with a 3960X

UD5 is nice but in a couple months the UD5S is due.

I'd go with the UD5 aswell, but as Tom mentioned UD5S is out soon so it depends on how soon you want a board

Cheers guys, seems Gigabyte is the favourite, I must say I love the matte black PCB on there boards, looks great and the UEFI is brilliant. I am very much into my rig aesthetics so the motherboard must look good. I must say I have seen the Asus boards in person and they also look excellent.

I was hoping to order the parts in the coming days, so I cant really afford to wait a couple of months. I suppose if the features it brings to the table are much better I could always upgrade down the line and sell my old motherboard. But cheers for the heads up Tom. :)

The Asus boards will be better clockers, power is lacking on the Giga 2011's and holds them back from decent clocks without stupid volts to circumvent the power issues.

Choices, choices. :D

This is really difficult I have been having a hard time deciding between the Asus boards and the Gigabyte boards all week, swinging from yes Asus then Yes Gigabyte. I agree with you Tom I have heard that the Asus boards are better clockers. I know the Gigabyte boards had issues with the power phases burning up when overclocking the CPU, I believe they sorted this with a BIOS update. However the heatsink on the power phases looks lacking on the Gigabyte board compared to the Asus equivalent.

I know the power delivery on the motherboards for the 2011 CPU's runs warm and I worry that the Gigabyte heatsinks will require even more airflow over them compared to the Asus heatsinks. Obviously both motherboards require some form of airflow over the power delivery anyway.

I'm in the same scenario, am I stupid for even considering an ASRock extreme 9 board. ASRock aren't in my trusted brand list as I've never used them so I'm a little hesitant but it goes with my colour scheme, and damm they look nice but this is a performance built it need to perform and last and OC well.

Asrock x58 boards were ok the z68 and the z77 prove that they are much better to what they used to be. I have used the extreme 9 on my friends rig its fine good features.

yeah i've been researching the asus and other boards all day I'm happy taking a change to ASRock because I'm limited to standard ATX and this is really the only board that fits the tray and the scheme.. was looking at the msi big bang X power 2 and dam it looks nice, to big though..
