What to do, What to do?

Help me out here guys. I am currently running a socket 775 E8400 rig. I have money to do an upgrade now. Question is.... Do I get an I7 950 with a gigabyte UD3R board and 6GB of G.skill DDR3 1600mhz or do I wait till Jan and see what the Socket 1155 brings to the table? I know its only a month a way but I don't think the 1155 will outperform the 1366.

As its literally just a few short weeks away, if you spent your money and it turns out the SB line are brilliant you'd have wasted your money - theres no harm in waiting for the release and looking at benchmarks before making your decision.

We've had this conversation so many times now my head is spinning lol.

Whilst the Sandybridge chips indeed look very fast and cheap they are limited to running dual channel. This means that 1155 is an extension of socket 1156.

The replacement for 1366 is nearly a year away, so if you were expecting cutting edge performance from Sandybridge then I am afraid you were wrong. Sure, they'll no doubt be fast chips but they're mid range chips.

For example. An 1156 I7 (870 or what not) can not even sniff the arse of a 950 say. And, the 870 chip costs more than the 950. This is due to the 1366 board costing more money because it's far more technologically advanced.

1366 boards however can be had for a song at the moment. Pfft, try that with an 1155 board. IMO buying anything at release means you have more money than sense but hey, I guess I've just not been in a position to throw money away for over a decade and nor would I want to.

The bottom line is if you want a new computer and don't cry every time something newer and better comes along to replace it then by all means buy a 1366 based system. Because if you buy an 1155 based system it won't be long before you feel exactly the same way. It will be replaced, it's not a matter of if but when. And when it does no doubt you will kick yourself if you're the sort of person that's into kicking himself/herself.

Also, expect teething issues with drivers, poor boards and all of the other things that tend to surround new hardware. Meaning you can expect to wait on a new bios.

Kudos to you AlienALX, you make alot of sense and I was leaning towards buying the 1366 and your comments were constructive and honest. Many thanks

I agree with alien, but just want to see those benchmarks, and what will happen with 1366 prices. Here in spain prices are rising a bit after 2 moths going down on the 1366 platform, I supose it's due to Xmas, after Xmas and 1155 release we will see what happens.

I don't know if this roadmap is real, but if it is you can see the place that the 2600k takes

It's obvious that the p67 has less features than the x58, but also brings new and interesting things...

And finally a pair of 2600k ES air and watercooled, first air

Please, anyone with an i7 950 to compare comment

Regards

Well yes and you also have the VAT increase coming up in England. This was part of the reason why I panic bought my I7 machine now, as I know those costs are going to be passed onto the customer.

Sandybridge may well be utterly fantastic but tbh it certainly wouldn't stop me doing something I was ready to do. Mind you, my I7 rig hasn't cost very much at all really. Everything without a GPU and cooler was £520.

Indeed as alien said Sandybridge may well be utterly fantastic but not for a good 6-9 months atleast when they begin making chips that can beat the 950/970 etc
