Do i upgrade my FX 8350 to something like a 6700K. or do i upgrade from my GTX 970 to a 1080 or 1080ti when it arrives on the market?

which would offer a better gaming experience? a better GPU would mean more frames but a new CPU would mean more consistent fps right?

Can you give us your full rig specifications please? It will make things a little easier to judge.

A budget for upgrading would also be helpful.

FX8350
M5A97 2 2.0
16GB DDR3 corsair vengence pro
500GB sandisk enterprise SSD
120GB kingston hyperx SSD
WD green 1tb HDD
BeQuiet! dark rock pro 3 CPU cooler
EVGA GTX 970 SC
Cooler Master 600W PSU.
Probably around £600 or £700 when the time comes to upgrade

I game at 1440 on an i5 and a 970. Very rare that it struggles.

My personal advice would be to upgrade the CPU/MB. Also consider the 1070 is released at the end of June. You would be a fool not to wait to see how that performs, if it is anywhere as good as they are suggesting. Maybe look at an i5 and a 1070.

okay thanks for the advice. is it worth getting a 6th gen intel cpu? or should i get a 4th of 5th gen and reuse my DDR3 RAM?

Personally, I have a 4670k running a good overclock and DDR3 RAM.

The only real upgrade I would do right now is to go i7 due to productivity work I do. Past that X99 is a large investment and newer z170 options don't really give much of a performance boost.

Skylake combined with high frequency memory improves FPS by a good amount.

Digital Foundry did a review of a i5 4500 OC with fast DDR4 and showed some nice improvements with improved memory clockspeed.

If you can spend some money on CPU (skylake), a Z170 board and 3200MHz+ Memory, you might get a good upgrade. The 1070 could potentially make a good addition if the rumors turn out to be true.

It depends what games you play. if you play alot of games like ARMA then a cpu upgrade is the best bet but on the other hand if its just something that doesn't need a strong cpu just replace the gpu.

Back when I had my 8320, the only real game it'd struggle with was ARMA. That said it was running a slight overclock. Regardless, the CPU will mean you'll get less fps. Just depends if you are going to get THAT much of a boost.

Barnsley is right it's very much dependent on what you do with your system and what games you play, heavier tasks require a stronger CPU an i7 would give you so much more power, I must say that moving from an i5 to an i7 is a very noticeable step with production tools and high demanding games. As far as upgrading from the 970 the same can also be said of the new GTX10 series, either of the 2 new cards would yield you a significant performance increase.

I think the problem with the FX8350 is that i get regular frame drops. i tried to overclock it to overcome this problem. however my example absolutely hates overclocking. i spent literally days trying xD even at 4.1GHz its really unstable. guess thats the silicon lottery at work. So with the frame drops in mind i think a better cpu would make for a more enjoyable gaming experience. ive been thinking i might save for a few months and splurge out on a 6700k and future proof it.

well if you do the maths then zen cpus wont be as fast as an intel cpu. i know its a rough estimate and not accurate at all. apparently 7th gen intel cpus come at the end of the year too right?

AMD said Zen will be comparable to Skylake. So it shouldn't be that far off. Don't believe any other rumors.. They have no backbone to them. Only concrete performance is what I just said.. I think they won't be able to do it, they'll probably be between Haswell and Skylake imo. Unless they OC like monsters then sure I can see it

I am a firm believer of using product that match i.e. intel with nvidia amd with radeon.
It may help to state which games your seeing an fps drop.
I am using an APU specifically the A10 6800k at stock and with the onboar gfx I was playing games with no issues at all (Arma 2 and 3 with addons, witcher 3 and sniper elite3. the only game that I would have to turn settings down was arma 3 but thats due to it being cpu intensive and having lots of addons.
I am still on the APU but now running with an R7 370 my fps shot right up in all games bar arma where i saw a small gain.

well ive just read an article saying that the 8 core zen that is due to launch in october will be roughly equivalent to an i7 5960x. which is very exciting to hear. whether it will stand up to that claim if another question but it will be very good for the industry if it does. hopefully it will be a fraction of the price of the i7 too. well looks like im going to be waiting for to decide what to upgrade after all

Sounds like a temperature issue if that is happening in all honesty. Your motherboard is also not all that great for AMD cpus running >1.4v imo.
