What RAM should I buy?

Hi guys,

I'm making a new build in like 3 weeks, 3770k, UD5 (probably) and a 7950 fully watercooled.

Now, I have the dilemma of finding money in my bank account so I need to buy something

I think I only really have enough for a set of RAM as something I could use straight away, as I dont have enough for the graphics card or anything else yet, but which RAM do I buy?

Don't want to spend unnecessarily loads on it, looking at:

http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Memory+-+RAM/DDR3/Dual+Channel+-+%281600MHz%29/8GB+Mushkin+Enhanced+Blackline+Frostbyte+LV+%23996988+%282x4GB%29+1600+%28PC3-12800%29+240-Pin+DDR3+SDRAM+CAS+9-9-9-24+1.35V+?productId=43961

Anything better for a similar price? I currently have 8gb of Kingston HyperX genesis and 8gb of Ballistix Sport in my system, but I'm building mates computers so they were gunna have it anyway.

Is there even any point buying new RAM or telling one of them to get their own and keep the Kingston?

Cheers

Just out of interest what is this system going to be for? If its just general use and gaming then scrap the 3770k and go with a 3570k

Just for general use and gaming yeh...but considering i'm gunna be spending over a grand on upgrades, I at least want an i7. Even considered going for a 3930k just to completely overkill it

In that case go for a 3570K. Don't spend money where you don't need it, a 3570K will be perfect

No! must have the i7

If the 3570k had just been branded i7, I'd have got that. But it isnt. Plus my budgets flexible, and I've wanted an i7 for ages

There really is no point at all. You going to be gaming and that's about it, why bother spending that extra £70-£80 for no reason? Seriously dude, think about it logically. I7's are for more intensive stuff which requires the use of hyperthreading, which you will not need at all

Hahahaha, dont go through this. It's exactly the same as what I say to everyone else on these forums.

But, I've gone through my entire computing time with crappy AMDs, and I've just had my 18th so I'm not exactly strapped for cash. I think if I'm building a system, I may as well do it with as high spec as possible. Also gives me bragging rights over mates who have a 2700k, 2500k and someone else I know just got an Alienware

I's save the £80 then save another 200 over the next few months and get a second 7950! Then see what your alienware mate says.

When I say alienware...

He spent £800 on a matx one that has a gtx 455 and an i3...

And I have the extra money now if i really wanted a second 7950, but I dont. This rig is completely overkill for one 1080p screen anyway, I'm only getting the i7 anyway for bragging rights. If the i5 was £100 cheaper and performed 10% better, i'd still probably get the i7!

But why?

how about save some money on the ram and get a 1.5v kit instead while you're at it... or save more altogether and leave the ram upgrade alone? you didn't specify your ram speeds but if it's the difference between 1333mhz and 1600, or the difference between 1.35 and 1.5v, you're going to be very hard pressed in noticing a difference. at least the i7 (since you're dead set on getting it) might have a small chance of showing performance gains in some uncommonly well coded games -some- time down the line

. for the record there are only a tiny handful of titles that use 4 threads to begin with.

p.s bragging rights? who exactly is going to congratulate you about your new pc lol. i just built a pretty sweet thing myself, and i'd feel a bit of a tit bragging about it to my friends. i built it to play games. but that's just me eh? ^^

NO! stop giving up! I completely understand all the pros and cons to getting both, I'd give out the same advice myself.

It's the same reason i didnt go for the UD3 over UD5 when they're basically the same. I'm just not too fussed about the extra cost, I just want it to be the best that I can build it, regardless of whether I actually need it or not.

Also considering the rigs got to last me through uni, then the few years after as I'm gunna be in so much debt I wont be able to afford any upgrades, I'd rather it was the best it could be. I know that whether I get the 3570k or 3770k i'll be happy whatever

I know, I even offered to build him one that would be smaller, better and cheaper, and he still bought an alienware!

I know performance is kind of lacking on it, but tbf, it does look amazing. It's only a little bigger than an xbox too
