What is this Silver thing? E758-A1 MOBO + Corsair H50 issue Help

hello guys

i thought i would try my luck on the forums someone kind enough to help me out

ive been frustrated trying ways to mount this corsair h50 i bought and i cant return on a evga e758-a1 motherboard inside a coolermaster atcs 840 case

i dont understand how people are doing this because i dont seem to have enough room with the fan and radiator placing in the back because that silver thing with the EVGA letters gets in the way.

wat is it ? is it necessary? i see there are 2 screws holding it down, am i able to remove it without issue?

any guidance on placement would be appreciated.

i go on newegg reviews and see people have the same board as me and can place it no problem i dont understand how !?

thats my board

if you look at the pics on the newegg website

im talking about the Silver metal thing with fins protruding to the left of where the CPU is placed , and it has the letters EVGA on it .

regards, to whoever can help me solve this issue

Well that's the cooler for the mosfetts so you don't want to be taking that off! Unless repacing with an alternative cooling solution, passive or water.

Unfortunately I personally haven't used the H50 but I know many on here have and hopefully will solve your problem.

thanks for your response lasher.

Alright thanks, well keep that in mind.

Still trouble placing the H50 onto the CM ATCS 840 at the back

I have found a solution temporirly placing it at the top taking out the 2x230mm fans

I have another question. My Temps on VREG are like 94 C on load

I have an i7-920 D0 overclocked to 4.2 ghz

evga e758-a1 mobo

and now corsair h50 keeping CPU cool on load at 77 C

the scary thing is my VREG... what exactly is it on my board? and how do I make it run cooler.

Thanks

Your VREG or voltage regulators reside near the CPU normally and control the juice going to your cpu. If they are at 95C, I suggest you look at the Vcore. As the load temperatures seem high for the H50, I think the Vcore maybe too high. Try getting some air flow over the "silver thing".

In order to fit the radiator, you may need to put the fan on the outside of the case, with the rad on the inside. TBH I reckon the radiator and fan should fit on the inside of the case. If you could put a photo up showing the inside of the case and motherboard, it would help.

Oh thanks Diablo, you made sense of that for me!

I'll post some pics for clarification like you suggested.

Here they are..

See I ended up removing the 2x230mm fans that come stock with the ATCS840 and mounted it on the top solo . I have to go out and back more fans later on this week because I can fit 2 more in the top.

Also the pics show you how tight of a fit it is, like just with the fan its almost so close to the 'silver thing' . its impossible to fit a radiator in there.

Also I took a pic of the back of the case, and the grills aren't flush with the cash, if I do fit the fan outside do I have to go to Home Depot or something and buy larger screws? because the stock ones don't cut it, they won't be long enough and also there will be a slight gap between the fan, and case due to the protruding grills.

Also just for note, I'm newb overclocked totally. And I overclocked the i7-920 (D0 Stepping) to 4.2ghz using exact values in my bios as this guy.. because our bios/boards are identical as well i believe.

This guy is playing with fire, that Vcore is waaaay to high. I have the same board and I can get 4.2GHz on 1.3V. 1.475V is asking for problems, so its not surprising that the VREGs are hot. The silver heatsink is obviously getting no airflow at all, so is going to get hot. My VREGs with a water block on barely touch 40C. I think that you may need to get a set of longer screws and bolt the fan to the outside of the case. As you say, the fan mesh isn't perfectly flat, but there's not a lot you can do about that. Put a fan grill on the front of the fan and position it so that the back 0of the fan is on the fan mesh on the outside. The screws should be relatively cheap, but make sure you get the right size.

I'm sorry I can't be much help here as I have fitted an H50, but that was on a different mobo and case, and ended up with the fan in the roof.

The screws are at least cheap, even if it is a pain in the behind to get them. I can't see any other way of doing it, especially as the 230mm fans will be needed to keep air flow over the northbridge.

Obviously the best solution would be to water cool the motherboard using a block, but that involves putting in a whole loop which is expensive, and by that stage you may as well have got a custom loop on the cpu.

Hop3e some of this helped, and thanks for the pics. I'll try to think of a better solution in the mean time.

is it possible you could PM me or post your bios settings so I could try copying them?

i7 920 D0

EVGA x58 3-SLI E758-A1

Corsair 6gb Dominator 1600 ram

Corsair H50 are my specs

Fraid I can't until I'm back at home. Its probably going to be tuesday at the earliest. The only setting I would change in his setup is the vcore down to about 1.3V. I'll have a look as soon as possible but I'm on my laptop atm.
