What is the best air cooler on the market today?

What is the best air cooler on the market today? By that I mean the most effective, the one that cools the best. Not looks the best or the best bang for your buck.

I know Tom is a big fan of the Noctua NH-D14 and has tested the Thermalright Silver Arrow.

I do believe he said the Thermalright Silver Arrow was neck and neck with the D14 (or words to that effect).

What about the Thermalright Archon or the NZXT Havik 140. Are they, as I have seen on other websites, better?

Is there a new king or what, I'd love to see a review with all these coolers up against each other, the Corsair H100 too. I know it's not strictly an air cooler but it's not really a water cooler either is it? It’s a hybrid.

Also there must be a difference for 2, 4 or 6 core processors. I'm only interested in Intel CPUs as I am led to believe they run the hottest and are therefore the hardest to tame.

Check out this review and see why I'm getting a bit confused. I think his opening line says it all.

D14 seems to get constantly good figures in reviews. But IMHO things have gone out of control with air coolers getting bigger and bigger and just look ugly. I'd rather go for somethings like the BARAM 2010 which looks nice not too big and still cools fairly well.

I have a 980x and with 6core/12threads water is essential over 4.4GHz.

The 1155 SBs don't give out much heat unless your really pushing them.
 
You will have trouble beating the Noctua D-14 just check out Tom's vids and you will see the only thing to beat it atm is watercooling
 
i have an antec Khuler 620 water cooling system put into my pc by a friend, its only 45 pound so its a cheap kit but its very good at cooling the cpu, My i5 Oc'd to 4.3 idles at 27 and i havnt seen it past 60 yet, it comes with 1 fan but i got 2 installed
 
the best air coolers on the market now are the Thermalright silver arrow and the NH-D14. They only have a difference of 1C.
 
I'd still like to see Tom and the Overclock3d team put a review together with the Thermalright Archon and NZXT Havik 140 up against the D14, Silver Arrow and Corsair H100.

Just to see them tested under the same conditions with the same fans, speeds, CPU, OC, MoBo etc.

I find it pretty hard to judge when I compare two reviews from different websites with completely different test criteria and or methods.

Check this one out just as an example.

I think you'll have to agree, the Achon looks pretty damn good. Especially when you look at the fan speeds.

Its really difficult to do a proper scientific test. For instance the H100 wouldn't even fit in some cases. The whole point about these reviews is to give you a feel so that you can make an informed choice. It doesn't really matter which one is king of the hill by a couple of degrees, everybody is looking for slightly different things in any product. Some value silence, others want performance and some want aesthetics, and you individually want a unique combination of these in comparison to someone else.

1 degree less temps with silver arrow but it gets to a point where its at like .xx so a $10 dollar or depending where you are difference from the nh-d14 its worth it.
 
Thermalright Archon is probably the best air cooler if you don't want to worry about RAM issues. Having said that, it's really tall and you'll run into case issues. The performance of the Archon seems comparable to Silver Arrow in a review I read, and the Silver Arrow is on par with the Noctua D14.

My friend also has one and it's really quiet and keeps his i7 2600K nice and cool.
