What is Overkill?

As the website you linked stated is that it is not as simple as you might think

I understand fully what it is saying.

The human eye can see something around 29.75 FPS. What people get confused is motion fluidity and what frames the eye is actually seeing, which is why people sometimes say they are seeing 60FPS in games. Fluidity is NOT the same as how many FPS, as the article will tell you. The 200FPS you mentioned is also simply explained. What the human eye can see is light flashing 200 times in one second which sometimes said as being able to see 200FPS when this is not true. The 200 flashes per second is referring to refresh rate. Have your eyes ever gotten sore while looking at a old 45hz crt? That is because your eye is picking up on the slow monitor flashes, in other words 45 flashes every second.

thats was a very interesting read. i suppose the difference with watching a film and gaming, is that in a "film frame" can still show movement (like the drum stick moving) and i suppose it easier for your brain to "join the dots" of the frame

as you are looking a a fluid motion just broken down.

the Frames in a game dont show movement as such as you are more looking at a load of "static images" that are slightly different given the illusion of movement (like a flick book) which i suppose can be harder for the brain to "join the dots" on which we may see as stuttering

i suppose nothing is overkill, you could just say youre future proofing for longer, but then gain you could buy a GTX590 now and would probably serve you well for the next 2yrs at least, and will run Battlefield 4 (yes i said 4) on all the "tooty fruity" settings no probs, you will still be eyeing up that GTX 690

Back to the overkill i wanted to get another 5870 to crossfire my pc but people say it is overkill for a 19" monitor but i bet in 2 or 3 years it will not be able to max every game.

Also i was told cpu 6 core overkill for gaming well over my 3 core i can see a huge increase in performance and also later on i expect game will use 6 cores or MORE.

Nothing is overkill if you want it and can afford it! Overkill is just a word or opinion and will mean different things to different people. To my way of thinking if you want to run 4 gtx580 lightnings or whatever then go for it as in the end only you have to be happy with it who cares what anyone else thinks.

I was *constantly* irritated when the other IT guy at my job left the refresh rates lower than 60hz. I *always* noticed flicker. The monitor I had with my first PC (with a 286 cpu) always gave me headaches (or nausea) after prolonged usage.

Most people will notice stutter in a 25fps movie when there is panning.

I don't know whether I'd notice a difference between 60fps and 120fps, since I haven't used a 120hz monitor.

You dont need 2x6990 or 2x590 to max out all of the games out there...even my 6850 maxes out all of the games out there for the moment, when I notice that it isnt able anymore to handle all of the games at max I will just add another one in there

The first guy is so right; today you have to go completely over the top when buying components because everything will be out of date in only a few months.

Overkill is simply a must - any less is a tragedy.
