What is Dual DVI For?

I recently got a x800 GTO with dual dvi. have been wondering why are there 2 dvi ports when i only use 1. cause last the last graphic card i used have one vga and one dvi.

Sorry if this question sounds stupid....

which im doing but i could use a third.

often got an avi file playing or the tv-card on my secondary monitor while browsing and playing games on my primary monitor.

2 dvi's is to be preferred over dvi + vga as dvi can easily be converted to vga but as far as i know vga cant be changed to dvi.

Also, huge monitors like the Dell UltraSharp 30" Widescreen use both DVI ports, afaik, for dual link dvi or something.

Nah they use one port but it has to be specified as a Dual Link DVI" port :)

Exactly what I was about to say (knowing from experience, muahaha)

Dual-Link DVI has nearly double the data transfer rate than standard DVI and is required to run high resolution sets for obvious reasons.

I hookup up my 30" to my 6800GT and the highest res it would let me select was like 1024x768 or something and boy did it look bad, lol. Dual-Link FTW!

erm, so what happens if you wanna run 2560x1600 when you have SLi, because (my understanding) out of the four dvi ports, only one is active when in SLi mode (correct me if i'm wrong), so how could you use 2 dvi outputs? Sorry to Hi-jack thread lol

If you read through the thread, dual-link DVI does not mean that you use two DVI ports. Dual-Link DVI is a single high bandwidth port that only the newer video cards have (starting with the 7800 series).

gotcha, I impress myself with my stupidity sometimes lol.

stupidity and lack of information is 2 different things ;)

information can be learned, smartness cant :p
