What instrument do you play?

Since we have a thread for currently listening and bodybuilding and hot babes, why not one for instruments?

Something for all the musicians here on OC3D. :)

So the questions:

- Which instruments do you play? (manufacturer/model?)
- How long have you played it?
- Do you have a band? (youtube link)
- What style of music do you listen to, play, get inspiration from?
- What gear do you use? (amplifiers, pedals, etc)
- Pictures?

I began to play the drums when I was 16 which is now 9 years ago, I got to borrow a Trax drumset, probably the shittiest drums you can find :D. Bought some cymbals but that set is all gone now. Played them for a couple of years.

Then I got a bass when I was 19 I think. A Schecter Diamond series with a Fender 12" amp. Still got them. Sound really great except for the input on the bass is a bit loose and I have to adjust the cable all the time. The bass got a really nice reggae sound to it. Smooth and rolling.

When I was around 21 I bought my first guitar. Which was a Ibanez Ambiance electro-acoustic guitar. Very nice guitar, although I wanted an electrical guitar, so I traded it for my current guitar which is a Epiphone SG (AC/DC and Led Zeppelin used those guitars, Gibson version that is.) and a Roland Micro Cube amp.

Then I wanted to play the drums again. So I got an electrical drum set, because I was living in the city and couldn't bang like a maniac at 4 in the morning. I use these to give drumming lessons to my neighbour, they are Yamaha DTX-plorer and I got Tama double pedals to go with them.

I also got a really nice Firch acoustic guitar, that I borrowed from a friend that moved to Sweden. By far my most expensive instrument :). Played the organ for a while as well, and a bit on keyboard, but my fingers are too thick for those small keys. :D

Not currently in a band. Usually I just jam with my friends. I listen to alot of different kinds of music, although mostly rock and metal, but also progressive, reggae, folk, blues, hiphop etc.

So when I'm not modding computers or gaming I usually rock on one of the above :)

Well then, what about you?
 
i play some gutar (accoustic) all i know is its a fender elecro accoustic which was £200, and I play the harmonica. (i have 4-5 of them at about £20 a pop.
never had any lessons in either so dont ask me what the notes/chords are called. and i only play things i like the sounds of. so i have a few pink floyd songs under my belt. mother, wish you were here, brain damage, quite a few off dark side of the moon and so on as i like the album. some from the wall.. just basically doing what i like the sounds of and probably arent being played exactly the same as floyd do it but sounds right to me and also my friends. with the harmonica its pretty easy really. if you can whistle it you can play it. i think any one can play the harmonica if they just pick one up and try for about 2-3 hours a week for a couple of months they should be able to play anything they can whistle. including guitar solos if thats what they wanna do.

also i potter about with mixing drum and bass, although its mostly jungle if im honest. scatty dnb, and liquid dnb. not at all in to that jump up nonscence. i used to do vinyl but went digital. so i have a herculese mp3 dj controller + virtual dj pro full. a word of wanring however just last week i went off t a friends house and jumped on his 1210's and he was horrified by how i had totaly lost the ability to do a decent mix on the vinyl. "so was i" by the time i had beat matched it found a good spot to bring in the new tune lined it up and started countting my bars the 1st track was finished... (not good)

I strum the old G string now and again. Currently have a Ozark Full Classical, Aria Mac 50v Floyd Rose special, Yamaha Pacifica, Honer 3/4 Classical, Zoom 505 multi effects, Cry Baby and Line 6 Spider II. Used to be in a band called Anubis we split after musical differences.

I don't have a band anymore, but I do have music of my own published online. PM me if you're interested and I can share the link. It's instrumental as I can't sing. :p

I'm told a lot of my own music sounds like Thin Lizzy mixed with Iron Maiden. I'm not sure where people get that from though, but I did and still do listen to loads of both of them.

I'll play any genre under the sun tbh. I do everything from Traditional Irish, to Rock, Death Metal, or Blues. When it comes to listening to stuff, the short answer is anything. Blues and Metal are my favorite genres though, both to play and listen to though.

- What gear do you use? (amplifiers, pedals, etc)
My guitars are all Ibanez. I've a 7 String RG, an RG with a floyd rose, and a fixed bridge Prestige model. I mostly play the Prestige model.

I haven't gigged in ages, but my main amp is a Vox AD100VT. The multi-effect pedal I use is a Zoom G2.1u. Both are 5+ years old now, kind of hard to believe!

Played on and off for about 7 years. I was in a band a couple of years ago (albeit for a very short time, we only played one gig).


Painful to watch back to be honest. The whole night was a disaster. The bassist quit literally 15mins after soundcheck, my guitar wouldn't hold tuning, we didn't have a lead vocalist so borrowed a friend from another band. You get the picture.
This was the last song we played and my guitar had dropped out of tune quite badly... but I was drunk as hell at the time (only way they could convince me to sing) so I didn't care.


As for equipment I have none. Other than guitar the only things I own are a Kustom 10W practice amp and a Marshall chorus pedal somewhere in the cupboard.

Sounds like a pretty big disaster lol ^_^

Hahah! Gig of a lifetime! I've heard alot worse though.

Since I myself cannot contribute with any of my own work, I can link a vid to a band whose members I usually jam with. They are 3 guys from a reallly small village in rural Finland. You don't get more underground than this. A psychedelic progressive metal mix of pure awesomeness. Song is a beast spanning 18 minutes. The true eargasm part is at 12min. If you like progressive metal, give it a go.

Hah! I've always believed in elves. There you go! Never heard of the OC3D elves before though. :D Yeah, what would the world be if everyone just played instruments all the time and never listened to it. Anarchy I tell you. Good thing we got you and the elves to sort it out.

Absolutely smashing mate! Yes, I headbang in acceptance! Awesome guitar work from the bearded guy. Really nice deep bassy sound. You go tell Mr. Nash next time you see him that they should head out to rural Finland sometime, I'll be there. I'll take the hint and won't talk to them though :D

Electric guitar, as do my kids. I play a David Gilmour clone Fender Stratocaster (same body, neck, strings, pickups, electronics, color and set up (including the extra mini 2 way switch for the neck pick up)) and the kids have a Gibson Les Paul. As for effects I use a modeling amp mostly which has all the effects built in and have a few older tube amps with pedals for those, but I almost never use those as it's a lot of hassle.
I learned to play as a kid using my 1961 Fender Mustang.
We had a neighborhood band when I was a kid and we covered songs like strawberry fields, incense and peppermints, Animals stuff, Kinks, etc.
Also a bit of piano.

I can play a little piano.

Never learn how to play many songs but I know a lot of (probably too much) music theory. This is because I produce music as a hobby and though it would be a good idea to understand the ''laws'' of music before I go smashing them to pieces.

So yeah. I have an M-audio weighted keyboard that I have hooked to my PC via midi at a total delay of 7ms, so I pretty much just play through my speakers when I'm learning a song.

pretty easy to explain really.
its all much the same. it works on the basis of "8"
so you have your 4 beats, (drum and bass is 2/4 house or something would usually be 4/4) all that is is the beat.
so you change the pitch till the beats are at the same speed "86bpm for instance" (although 172 or 43 would also work with it as you can match them up.. but may want to worry about your tempo then)

then you find a nice part of the new track you want to come in on.

then you listen..
the beat goes
1 2 3 4
1 2 3 4
1 2 3 4
Some thing new comes in or something is taken out of the track that is playing. (that is the start of your 8)
then you count with the beats.. 1 2 3 4.. 2 2 3 4.. 3 2 3 4.. 4 2 3 4.. (all the way till you get to 8 2 3 4) Then the next time instead of counting 9 2 3 4.. you bring your new track in on the "9"
you also never count to 9.. you would just start again at 1.
its beats bars and phrases..
You dont have to obay those rules either but unless you know whats going to happen if you break them its best to stick to them. because one track could be 1/2 way through its build up and your second one comes smashing in with its big finale a bar to early.. and that doesnt sound good no matter how well you have it beat matched and in key.

and that really is about all there is to it.. (short of track selection and making sure the tracks are in a key that will work together and any vocals wont just be clashing over the top of each other)
Its good fun and a lot easier now with all the software available.

but like i said it is a 2 edged sword. it may be easier but one day you will jump up to get on some ones vinyl set up and you cant do shit any more because your out of practice. :(
