What cooler to get

I'm using a Coolermaster Wavemaster case (so i'm pretty limited to the size of the cooler i can use)

The dimensions of it are: L540 x W198 x H458 mm

I'm running a Q6600 (older one) on a Gigabyte P35-DS4, and i was wondering if anyone could recommend a good cooler. I'm currently using the stock cooler which is pretty crap as it even has an aluminium baseplate on the heatsink :(

Thanks!

Matt

198mm case width... A quick calculation (10mm tray, 10mm standoffs, ~8mm cpu+socket) leaves about 170mm for total cooler height.

170 mm is sufficient for almost any high end cooler. Here are a few popular ones:

- CM Hyper Z600 (height: 160mm)

- Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme (Height: 160.5mm)

- Noctua NH-U12P (height: 158mm)

These three can all fit two 120mm fans so you should be all right. Do you have a fan in your side panel? That would decrease your max. height with 2cm, ruling out all sinks listed above.

ahh, i have no cooler on the side panel at the moment, the only thing im worried about is the weight of these coolers as they are quite heavy, do you have any recommendations about which is the most suitable? im also pretty limited with space due to the motherboard silentpipes, but hopefully it will fit!

oh, and obviously which one would be most efficient? i don't want crazy clock speeds (probably just 3.2Ghz or something)

the worrying thing is on:

if you see the silentpipes, they're quite close and may mean some coolers wont fit (aka the zalman huge one and others)

Hmm do you mean most efficient in cost vs. cooling or just the coolest? Personally I really like the Noctua (I have the SE myself) but the TRUE (thermalright) is told to be the coolest, even though with just a few degrees at load.

i meant space & cost vs cooling really, im slightly worried that none of those will fit my motherboard :(

EDIT: The Noctua does look to be an awesome cooler, i just saw the review of it on here. Can you help me confirm, or try to confirm, that it is gonna fit on my motherboard? :)

Very much appreciated!

Matt

:) YAY!

thanks, alot, i will definately be getting this cooler!

EDIT: do you suggest i use the thermal paste that comes with it or some other alternative? And do you have any suggestion as to where to get it from? Scan/Overclockers seem to be similar prices and i havent found it any cheaper!

Nice to see my reviews actually being put to use :) (assuming you read mine in the member reviews section ofc :p)

I think the fanned U12P will fit just fine on your motherboard. In fact, the one in the hardwarecanucks review is a single fanned version and has lots of spare room. Please keep in mind that only the SE1366 is shipped with two fans.

I ordered from here:

I never used the supplied paste, you should check out ocz paste, I have used some, worked great for me.

Wait, I didn't reply to the paste matter, did I? O.o

The NH-1 paste is put nearly equal to the top MX-2 paste in reviews, so you should be all right with it. I used MX-2 because I purchased it for my gpu cooler anyway.
