Hi OC3D

I had a list planned to buy but my psu wasn't going to be instock untill 12 Jan or so, then I saw this new radeon release and heard nvids can be hot with 2 screens.. I want 3 screens approx 22 to 24 inch... so am thinking of changing to radeon figuring they will drop in price and are generally cheaper anyway..

I have read around some and realise they, radeons, aren't as wild in special effects like the nvids phyx but they are better & cooler with a few screens. I am not planning to use the screen merge thing, forget it's name.. where all the image is over the 3 screens, and don't want any crossfiring. The screens are just needed space

The power I have is:

2600k and will only turn it up to turbo boost...

SRock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 Motherboard

16 g ram @ 1600

1200w psu

And I did have that the gigabyte gtx 580 overclock in the list but with radeon cards, what would equal that roughly ?

What do you all figure on price drops coming?

Also how long do these usually take to filter down to us customers.. especially all the way down in the colonies of Australia

Thank you for any help or knowlge you can share with me

correct they can (Nvidia) get warm when pushing more than one screen but so do AMD's its not over bearing mind you. if your looking at 580 performance from an AMD card I'd say min 6970 but 6990 for sure. Then you have the inherent heat AMD normally produce on their own plus the leaf blower sounding fan. And another correct point no physx's with AMD you say you want 3 screens afaik their are a couple 580's (as well as 570/560's) that will do 3 screens natively (KFA for one) somewhere on our site theres a link to them in a post I'll see if I can dig it up. But if ur dead set on 3 screens AMD and its vices may be ur best option. since ur pushing a 1200watt psu (overkill imho for one gpu) you may be able to get the 580OC ur looking at and use ur current card for the third monitor ( assuming its Nvidia) just some options for ya to consider

You might just be better off buying a 580, the Twin Frozr II/Lightning versions from MSi run pretty cool, the Gigabyte versions would do so as well.

Thank you SIN

I worry about heat here.. just got no air con or insulation and massive glass windows all around on top of a hill with some pretty hot summers. Also am happy if the Radeon is cheaper. I have this extra time while my shop gets in the psu.. so with the price drops coming with that Radeon 7 I am going to try to cash in.. I also have read the Radeons can be complicted with their drivers but am hopeing the 6 series is settled by now.

Yer I know my psu is overkill, but i had a few things in mind.. I'll never fry a component from lack of power and i can buy it now and not have to buy one again for a good while. I spent up well too on a good cooling case.

I was set on nvid at first as that is what I have had in store made cases before and seemed ok, one did fry after 2 yrs use, which I was ok with..

but I just looked at this laptop heap of sh*t I have now which has some bad flaws - keeps heating up to 90 C and shutting down and to keep it working to just use it online it sits on a massive house fan and is still really hot and it's card is a radeon 55** something, so i figure if it can survive this heap of junk laptop sitting on 24/7 with an extra screen for a year, they aren't to bad a card.

If you do go for an AMD card don't bother with a reference card (unless you will water cool it in the future, as full blocks are easier to find for reference cards) as the leaf blowers are noisy and the same card with a really good cooler such as the MSI TF3 will drop the temps by a good 10C and are so much quieter.

Hi Sheroo,

Thanks very much, I will look into MSI radeon cooling this arvo! Gigabyte Radeon HD 6970 Overclocked runs 3 fans

You might just be better off buying a 580, the Twin Frozr II/Lightning versions from MSi run pretty cool, the Gigabyte versions would do so as well.

Yeh I had the Gigabyte GTX580 overclocked on my shopping list it has 3 fans and is about 570$AU

580 performance from an AMD card I'd say min 6970 but 6990 for sure.

580's (as well as 570/560's) that will do 3 screens natively (KFA for one)

I looked seems we cant get the KFA cards here in Aus, but their 580 runs 4 screens!!!

As for a R6990 Any ideas on price drops and availability after this new Radeon series comes out?

Memory size will help too with the screens?

I do want 3 if possible am aiming for it..

What about xfire 6950's? You could also bios unlock them to 6970's and they would set you back £430 if you get two twin frozr III's.

Goo suggestion MaXiMiZe, but I don't think you could do that anymore, I think it was just a batch of them that could be unlocked. Don't quote me on that though

.

If you can afford £450 I would go with a 7970, they overclock like a beast with next to no increase in temps or powerdraw. You will get a lot better performance out of them than you will a 580, plus they support up to 6 screens.

Hi guys,

Thanks very much. Possibly it will be 2 screens now as there is a special on the Dell UltraSharpTM U2412M (24 Inch IPS 1920x1200 dpi 60Hz)

Here in Australia atm, just tomorrow left - 120$ off - down from 400$AU to $280 - 2 per customer. I've got a dell now 22" and it's been great for years, sadly though it's dpi is different size to these.

I've ordered my screens.. so it is two screens in the end... Thank you for the idea's.. but I am not keen to sli or crossfire... I've spent more on the screens and also a a wacom tablet than I expected.. my hopes are some prices will dive quickly with the new radeon 7 series..

@SieB, Yass, Max.... Top end cards here in Ausralia are around 8 or 900 dollars.. to much for me atm... As it ends up now a nvid or radeon is ok screen wise... ATM a 580 is about 550$ and a 6970 is around 300$... I have a little time up my sleeve while my components get into stock at th eshop.. So will research more on the 2 cards.. heat & noise wise... & see if there are price drops.

Thanks again!!

Hi guys,

I just finally put my order in and went with an AMD - Gigabyte Radeon HD6970 2GB Overclocked at $AU 379 ... It came down to price the gtx 580's all around $AU 570

I was also from what I can gather from you lot and reading up... choosing between Nvid's heat and AMD's noise... Had to opt for less heat really as it can get so very hot where I live...

Thank you all again for the help.

Thanks Max, it is all here now and built.. smooth as a babys bum.. all for what I am hoping is a small prob with the v-card..

Was the best thing to learn how to build this.. already I want to rebuild it with new parts, lol..

I am not going to read every post, but if you want the best results for eyefinity get a 6990, and water cool it. I only use it for one display, but my friend has a 6990 (also water cooled) and he plays Crysis 1 & 2 just fine on 3 1080p displays.

FYI 590 sucks ass if you plan on doing even the most minute overclock. 6990 watercooled can hit 1000/1400 EASY!!
