guess i need to start saving my pennies for a 970 now.

TBH a 290 or a 290X in the very near future might be the better buy, I'd say you can anticipate deep price cuts on both in response from AMD.

Same goes with a GTX 780, it didn't happen to the 680 after the 700 series came out, but you might see price cuts on that too. Although I do see people selling them quite cheap here on eBay/adverts.ie

EDIT: I just had a look at a few sites, and I can't believe some of the prices of the aftermarket R9 290s. It's a major bargain at the minute. I'm seeing it for a good €100 cheaper than the 970 or 780...

And there is nothing on the AMD press release page yet either, last bit of news was the on the 18th which was to do with Freesync.

The 25th announcement (today) was just the India release of the 280 and a couple of Firepro cards
I don't think we will hear anything new from AMD for at least a few weeks.

would really like the lower power/temps and it only has to beat my 1gb 7850 to keep me happy. (my 7850 has a stupid error so it tears like crazy on the desctop unless i use it in 1080I. which annoys my eyes. but its fine in games or anything that forces the card out of idle mode) so even a sidegrade would be fine.
but in terms of power performance temps and being able to overclock just for fun i think the 970 is a good option.

even if i could get a 680 for a nice low price id think of that. but the 290x is just a bit too hot for my liking.
