What 1155 motherboard to get

Hi everyone,

I am building a new PC for my parents and the rest of my family. I want it capable of light gaming but doesn't have to be that good. I do not plan to overclock this rig so don't need a K processor, but I would like to get a decent motherboard which will allow for upgrades in the future. My thoughts at the moment are a i5 3450 CPU.

As for motherboards, I was thinking an Asus P8Z77-V Pro. Is this a decent idea, or are there other Z77 motherboards around the £150 price which I should look at? Oh and the other restriction is an ATX board.

The aim is to spend about £300 for a CPU and motherboard and then get a GTX560Ti for about £85. The whole build I am trying to keep under £700.

Will this combination allow for decent performance for price and also leave the possibility for an upgrade in the future?

If your not overclocking you may as well just go with a cheap H61 board

Also what kind of games? If they are not cpu intensive you could get away with an i3 2120

I am not planning to overclock to begin with, but I would like a motherboard which in the future would allow me to, if I ever wanted to get a cheap second hand k processor. I prefer to spend more money on a motherboard than other parts as I think (rightly or wrongly) that in the long run it pays to have a better motherboard.

I plan on having this rig for (hopefully) at least 5 years so would prefer an i5 to an i3.

for 300 quid you should be able to get a 2500K and a decent motherboard surely. I know you said you didn't want a K but if it's in your budget then why not. Or just the regular 2500

The P8Z77 pro is not needed at all for just a family pc and there is no need whatsoever to spend that kind of money on it.

Go with the i5, but drop down to like a cheaper MSI board as it'll be more than enough anyway.

Thanks for the replies everyone, so if £300 is being spent across the CPU and motherboard, you would suggest spending closer to £100 on the board and closer to £200 on the CPU?

no spend 130-140 on the cpu and 60-80 on the motherboard, dont spend all the money just because you can

get a GTX560Ti for about £85.

Where are you getting that 560 ti?

i used to have an i3 2100 and it would play bf3 on high easily so itll be more than enough for light gaming

the i3 with a cheap h61 motherboard and a 550ti will be a great light gaming machine mate
