weird message when browsing OC3D

Due to severe restrictions in work, we cannot disable adblock as i have no control over the browser settings. Sadly this popup makes my reading during workhours a grievance.

I think it will deter newcomers too. At home its no problem but it was nice to read OC3D at work during breaks.

Not sure what we use at work but I see nothing of the ads here and I don't get anything saying to whitelist either. Just a nice crisp black border around the forums.

At home and on mobile I see the ads and they don't worry me (like most have mentioned they're not pop-ups, links, take over your screen or remind you of that one time you searched for that one thing...)

Just glad this forum seems to be on the allowed list at work (we have pretty severe restrictions as well and *most* forum content is blocked)

The only things I would love to see is the mobile friendly forums back and maybe a place holder for youtube links. The 'What are you currently listening to?' thread is a wall of blank during business hours. Damn corporate internet policies.

Means I can't see what band or track it is - but to be honest that's my problem not OC3Ds.

I just have to say, of all the forums I visit, the ads here are the most well designed to blend in and not be intrusive. I thought the way the message was nice and polite. If you want to see a bad example go over to [H] and try to post a link to a shop that is not their affiliate and try to click on it. They have huge popup windows and are just annoying and intrusive.

I have no problem white listing this site. I hope others do too before we see more intrusive messages.

this was never about the ads in the first place it was about the script that made me/us have to click ok to regain site access to each thread clicked on. I dont mind ads I only installed adblock for a couple other sites that have imho over abundance of them plus at one point those ads were severely hampering my visits enjoyment on those sites. But as adblock blocks ads on all sites I never really bothered to unblock some site or figure out how to do it. So please this is not about the ads but about they way it was brought about to handle our viewing them. I've been on this forum for over 4 years now and never have I felt the ads to be bothersome.

So Tom and Staff please forgive me if my thread was misinterpreted as complaining about ads. I totally understand why they are needed.

S_I_N I'm 100% fully aware your post wasn't about the ads, it was about the delivery of the message, and I understood that. So don't worry :) I will look to iterate on it, but for the first implementation, a harsh approach had to be used. We tried to make it as polite as possible, while having as little impact on the server performance as possible (because I knew as soon as I switched it on, the 60% of our viewers that do block the ads, would actually create a bunch of extra processing to keep track of, hence not doing a 10 refreshes before a message thing).

I'll be looking into it this week.

In other news, forum buttons will be made to have a proper red tint today \o/

If only more people were like that.

There is a reason that Tek Syndicate are using Patreon now and linus has so many reward tiers for forum payments, Amazon affiliate links and so so many advertisements.

The ad supported model for sites like this has became so much less viable than it once was.

The problem I have is the lack of customisation during work. TeliaSonera is a huge company so they have been pretty nazi in terms of allowing us to use plugins, or making any changes to the browsers. They have adblock on by default and I cant remove it. At home it isn't an issue.

Sadly it just means for the time being I have to put up with this pop up constantly if I view at work.

edit* I still believe it will act as a deterant for newcomers visiting the site. Its not a good pop up to have on your front page. Understandable when viewing forums but not http://www.overclock3d.net/.

I dont mind the ads at all, its just the pop up. But at least it will be looked at soon :)

message has gone away now, will be implementing something different in due course.

Aye, I do think that's best for newcomers. What you could do is implement some banners in the site background. You won't see them when the ads are displayed over them, but if you block the ads, you'll just see a bunch of banners where the ads are supposed to be with the message that you had in the pop-up and honestly those won't look appealing either so people would be more tempted to just disable Adblock and at least not just go to a different forum cause they can't really use this with it enabled.

That sounds like a great idea to me!

Ive had adblock disabled for OC3D for years already, the forum is my homepage ^^

it's not quite that simple, but something along those lines.

I'll make them psychedelic boxes that change colours and flash at people, oh but of course.. then people will suddenly decide they're epileptic, and that we can't do that either..
Perhaps a pre-emptive popup saying 'Site may cause seizures' yeah that sounds okay, I'll go with that
