Weird goings on with my A64 - potential warning!

IT ain't actually that complex when you read up all about what your planning on doing...I'm 18 years old, I have been building computers since I was about 7 and have really gotten into them in the past 12months.

3DMarking was a big thing for me from about September last year till Xmas, that's when I ended up with all this A64 gear, but unfortunately money started to run out :(

So now I'm sat here with the knowledge and ability to massively overclocking and hitting 27-28k on the ORB... but the funds are letting me down..

... always the way I suppose :p

So if I can help anyone I will...

heh im similiar in some aspects, im only 17 and ive been building for a while now but have never done anything extreme as my budget is limited and i cant afford to waste money on blowing things up (as much as id like to :P) im seriously thinking of volt modding my gfx card tho (well first i need to remove the shim which is gonna be an ass :()

ive got an official Rad 9800Pro, i replaced the stock cooler with an artic video silencer, my current speeds are 380/380 which sux :( i wanna go higher but get artifects.

I use all the defaults voltages thru my Bios settings (1.5V)

The reason i was gonna remove the shim is because i dont think the sink is making a very good contact with the core, if there is a gap is minimal though, i think i may need to get some better cmpound also

You shouldn't really need to remove the shim wiv the 9800 + series as the core sits level with the shim. The overclocks you say do sound bad though... could just be a bad core.. my old 9800Pro used to max out Rage3D Tweak w/o volt mods, using an 80W Pelt and Ice water...

well my card is definately getting very hot (dunno why i have good airflow) and i wud hope my cores ok, i spent extra money on it making sure it wasnt third party (mainly to get better memory on the card tho) i think the stock cooling isnt enuff tho.

1.) What voltage does your motherboard set asside for the AGP bus?

2.) Is using a pelt safe? i know ferrets water cooling leaked and it killed his vid card :(

3.) what kind of dmg is a pelt gonna set me back?

1) You should never really need to up the AGP voltage on your mainboad... this usually leads to random deaths of your gfx card after a few hours use..

2) Using pelts are definitely safe as long as read up about it before you start, everything needs to be condensation proofed.... I have never had a water kit leak on me before, and even if it does, you should be using de-ionised water..

3) Pelts are costly I will admit as you need all the water gear to go with them as well.. this is where most of the cost lies.

eeek how do u make everything "condensation proof" but everything in plastic bags? :P seems a pain, hmmmmz maybe its time to buy a new card (not that i can afford one atm) or shud i volt mod it :P

pfff cant i just send it to one of you guys and give u money and u can fit it all :P if i do it u can bet ure bottom dollar EVERYTHING will fry

aXer's core is lower than his shim as he pointed out there was no thermal paste on the heatsink when he removed it. Normally you would see a faint square.

ferret im presuming you removed yours also?

whats aboout the max i can set all my settings to on air without dieing?

Na I did not have to with my water block, it made good contact.

Maximum settings would be those before it starts artifacting. Dont touch AGP voltage and leave it at 66 Hz. Artifacting is a good way to tell if it is getting too hot.

see at 400 alone i get artifects due to heat i reckon, so i do need better cooling im just scared of water and condensation, this CPU mod looks pretty ok condensation wise so im not worried about that

carefull modding the Vdimm if you have a CPU with onboard memory controller, lots of people blowing their cpu's because of this !

Best bet is gonna be an Nforce 3 mobo & unlocked CPU, find max FSB then up the multi, thats where the prommie gonna shine. AFAIK only the FX series have unlocked multi's..

the rest werent built for overclocking so i wud assume ure right, the FX is like a whole extra lot of dough so it sounds probable to be unlocked to me

phil mate can u use any ram dividers on this board?try running your ram lower...i know it may sound weird but try it and let me know...
