Vista what to turn off/disable ?

Yeah man.. Top man for giving it a go and actually logging every thing :) but apart from saving 100mb of ram usage the benches so far don't warrant the effort.

Keep on at it and hopefully we see more gains :)

I have to agree, and yes to be fair unless you actually do it, or some1 does it, you`ll `never know`.

I wouldn`t exactly say it went down, I`d be tempted to say "no change", being that if u just restart a pc the results can be up or down by similar numbers afaic. 100m ? what`s that against 4G ? Definately not worth it to this point.

There are a handful of other shutdown things to look at this evening, but I`m not holding my breathe in anticipation atm, the cache thing would be interesting.

The only ~real~ thing u notice is things pop up quicker, including startup, but in all honesty that`s not what the machine`s being used for. AND I do wonder if u just changed the theme settings to "best performance" u may get similar results.

Equally tho, I`ll complete it and make an image. In this sense I might gauge how games "feel" against a full install.

Well yeah I wouldn't say the 100mb is worth the effort seeing as thats why we buy more RAM.. And like ya say what is that out of 4gb..

Well good luck with the rest of it.. I wont be able to check until tomorrow night how it goes as I'm over my gf's today and tomorrow.

I wasn't sure what effects all this would have, I assumed they would be positive!

I'm glad I applied minimal tweaks tbh. The only one that 100% needs to be off is UAC.

Good man for doing this Rast :worship:

I know the uac is annoying, but I do think these kinda things are a good idea. The Mac one I got a bit used to last year. It helps if they`re a bit more intuitive tho.

(crack on with some searching)

1. Turn off screen saver - d`oh!

2. Turn of indexing on drives on the VISTA installed partition (c: ) 15.1G/36.1G btw

3. Folder Options

-Always show icons, never thumbnails - check *does the old DoNotCacheThumbnails*

-Display file icon on thumbnails - unchecked

-Display full file path in title bar - check *like this*

-Show hidden files and folders - check

-Hide extensions for known filetypes - unchecked

-Hide protected operating system files - unchecked

-Show preview handlers in preview pane - unchecked

-Use sharing wizard - unchecked

4. Disabled DEP

5. Windows Defender was still scanning, so turned off it`s scanning via its prefs.

6. Turn off scheduled defrag

7.** only 1 thing I want to try after this which is the cache thing, Superfetch, which has 4 options, but I`m sceptical about it`s benefits - and it`s a registry thing (unless ur turning it off)**

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters

(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters\SuperFetch~1) -hmm

Disable Caching: 0

Cache Applications Only: 1

Cache Boot Files Only: 2

Cache Everything (default): 3

(delete files in WINDOWS\Prefetch)

Wanna try bootfiles only - hmm

8. Network adaptor, turned off the power off to save, set 1G full duplex.

** note turning uguru off saves 2% cpu & about 40m.

Weird. Pretty inconsistant. 1 thing I`ve just thought of, don`t know if it`ll be worth logging.

I`ll summize all this into one post with a conclusion and whatever.

Thing is with the up and down amounts of some of those benches, they`re quite likely to both swing the other way each time u reboot. (it`s what pcs do)

Can`t figure how SuperPI got quicker tho, may be a visually small amount, but it is a 32m calc.
