vista freezing

well vista has started to freeze randomly but the only event in the eventlog says "system shutdown at xx:xx:xx was unexpected" with no entries for atleast 5 mins before the time listed in the 'unexpected' event(if that makes sense). anyway it seems to happen most when gaming but everythig is below redline temp wise, power supply is fine and hdd is ok. the only thing left i can think of is its either the os (something like a corrupt file) or the cpu/mobo. any ideas would be great.

the gfx is 186.18 and the mobo is 15.25, but i dought that a gfx driver is doing this and i fear it may actually be a peice of hardware. if it is (lets say a my gfx cards) what to you think i would get in return for a 98gtx. but for the sake of stay up to date im d/l the gfx driver now.

I thought i had a hardware problem for ages and began trying different virus killers. They kept finding multiple trojens but couldnt remove a few and finally with panda my system began freezing on the desktop. I though it was my new ram but it then its happened with my old ram in which it hadnt done before. Panda kept asking for restarts after a failure in the virus protection so scrapped got McAfee and it found everything and sorted the system out. Possibly a virus or trojan infection?

possibly but i don't know were i would have gotten one, i just game mostly with the occasional visit of facebook, pc forums, hardware sites, and e-stores like newegg frozencpu etc. I'll download a trial from mcafee and test that theory, thanks.

So you saying that you didnt have an anti-virus previously ?

just the windows stuff. i don't have any important stuff on this pc that would compromise me or my identity etc. just games and the like.

EDIT: just finished a norton scan and there are no viruses. malware and adware are also no existant

How does vista behave in safe mode? I'd suggest going in without network access.

If Vista is fine in safe mode i think you can be pretty sure its a driver or conflict problem and can then begin the process of ruling out hardware, startup programs and the like.

the only problem with that is i cant run games in safe mode because the drivers arent being loaded, and since this almost always happens when gaming (with exception to once, which has been accounted for by a faulting psu) i wouldnt be able to test the system, which is why i'm leaning toward data corruption or a hardware problem (like overheating, bad component i.e. cpu mobo etc).

if it is data corruption a restart repair should fix it correct? i'll have to check full load temps (loading both gfx and cpu) and see if my north bridge is getting too hot which very well might be the case (though i dont see how) which would explain the 'random' restarts no?

Update: when the rig is fully loaded temps got a bit high(60c on the cpu and 61c on the mcp) while the gfx cards stayed around 48c. also while doing this test i noticed that the second thread on prime 95 seemed to have gotten stuck in that threads 1,3, and 4 but 2 didnt complete anything beuond the first operation.

based on this i think its safe to say its not a heat problem, i'll try doing a repair install of windows and see what happens

i was in the process of making an up to date image of my disk when the computer froze. this is important b/c i used a boot disk of the program to do so, i believe that this should narrow it down but im not sure to what exactly cpu, mobo, hdd?

thanks for the link, but the problem is i dont know how to test for this as there seems to be no link between the occurences. i bumped the voltage of the cpu up a notch maybe that will do it. i'm printing the steps out now incase it happens again but if it was software wouldnt there be a event in the event log?

UPDATE: well i dont know but it seems like increasing the cpu voltage helps (though i dont know how i would test this). at 3.3ghz 1.3375v was enough until maybe 2-3 months ago when this started. however i have a thoery that this may be caused by restoring an image of vista but i cant remember EXACTLY when this started or if it correlates with an image restore.
