Vista Boot Error

My girlfriends laptop (she doesn't have much luck) just got a message saying that there was a corrupt boot driver. Something like 0xc0000098. Tried booting in safe mode, nothing, simply booting again, nothing, booting in all modes, nothing, tried windows diagnostic, nothing, shoved in my windows 7 dvd incase that worked and it said there was no operating system on the disc. We don't have original vista disc either.

Really need some help as I don't want to have to pull it apart and get the hard drive out to get her work off it.#

Also, could the fact that she keeps using it on the bed, where it gets ridiculously hot, be a cause?

Thanks guys!

Nope overheating will not create a driver problem, if you could post the exact error code it would help.

Also, download the disc image from the internet (it's legal to do) as long as you have the CDKEY and have already got a disc! Do not pirate!

That was the exact error code, just checked. We don't have CD Key or anything :(

If you got the repair cd with the laptop it also is a Windows CD, so go ahead and download.

is it ntoskrnl.exe?

You'll need to manually restore some files again to the version that came with your Windows installation DVD. Use the Windows DVD to boot into repair mode and restore these files using the command prompt:

In your "\Windows\System32\" folder, restore just these files:

hal.dll

ntoskrnl.exe (You shouldn't need to replace it because it's not really corrupted.)

ntkrnlpa.exe (Same as ntoskrnl.exe. Try booting without replacing them first)

And in your "\Windows\System32\Drivers" folder, restore these:

acpi.sys

msisadrv.sys

pci.sys

volmgr.sys

volsnap.sys

disk.sys

No it was something else, I'll see if I can find a repair CD. It's running the extended diagnostic now, I'll tell you the exact file when it's finished.

I suggest if you have Roxio, put the disc in another comp, find the PxHelp20.sys file and copy it to a USB drive/pen drive and copy it over the other version, it seems it got corrupted.

Cant copy it if it wont even boot :( Literally it wont do anything apart from tell me about the error. Taking the harddrive out now, if i can connect it to my pc then i can overwrite it and hopefully that will work

Right, connected the hard drive to my computer (finally, my computer has OS and BTMGR on different HDD's :/) I'm looking at the file right now. Do I delete it? Trying to find a replacement on internet. Or copy my windows 7 one over?

Or just delete the file. Apparently its associated with the winamp 5 series cd burner. It's fine now, will uninstall winamp too just incase
