Building a basic server that will require access from anywhere in the world via remote web access...

Just want to know if the bog standard basic cheapo Vista Basic will let me set up something like this?

Plus are there any REAL limitations of going for the Basic version?

vista basic + premium dont support remote desktop as far as i know though you could use a third party program like vnc

Why would you want Vista on a server? Other than the cost of the License, 2008 web edition is likely what you want.

You could use Live Mesh for remote control all over the world, as long as you can run the activex control or install the software.

...for £280 i'd expect bill gates to come and personally mow my lawn for the rest of my life...that is a silly price

is LiveMesh free to use? I'm guessing this only allows you access from a PC you have admin rights too and can install the activeX controls?

If that isn't possible...is there a web browser based option?

(preferably free or very cheap)

to be fair all it needs to do is be quick, reliable and pretty much dosile otherwise :D i guess XP Pro would do the trick? will vista actually give me any benefit? extra security or something? I will run commodo/avg/caspersky or whichever on it obviously

the purpose is simply for file access...that's all, needs to be secure and that's it

Well if its just for that XP would be fine. But have you looked at Linux/FreeBSD. Both free, have better security than windows, just requires a little time to learn and setup.

i don't have the time to learn about linux unfortunately :( plus the pc is for my uncle who isn't going to be able to learn linux either
