VII Hero & i7- 4970k = qCode 00

So, my mate finished building his new computer last night, as follows..

Maximus VII Hero
i7 4970k
2x8GB Corsair Dominator 2133 9CL
MSI GTX 970
Samsung 850 Pro SSD
Barracuda 1TB
Corsair 600W PSU

So he put it together without any issue. He used G 'something' to up the RAM speed from 1333 to 2133, as it should be.

Last night he was playing Football Manager fine and has been using the PC throughout today. A few hours ago be bought and played DayZ, after about 30 seconds, his PC shut down. No error message.

The PC would not boot back up. It lights up as you would expect, the fans turn on but no output was reaching the monitor. Keyboard and mouse both not on either.

I went round and noticed that the PC seems to try to boot (it whirls as you would expect, but then goes quite after a few seconds). Firstly, I tried a different monitor, using HDMI from the Mobo rather than Display Port from the Video Card.

Still nothing.

I then noticed the error code on the Mobo '00'. To this minuite this is the only thing I can find wrong with the set-up. We have googled it and it seems to come down to three things mainly.

- Dogey CPU
- Dogey Mobo
- Dogey PSU

The CPU looks fine, we reseated it but it had no effect.

The Mobo appears fine, the reset button does not work.

As far as I can tell the PSU is fine.

I tried resetting the CMOS button at the bottom of the motherboard but that did nothing.

I have no clue as to what I could try but I thought I would ask here before we start sending parts back, starting with the Mobo as it seems its the most common failure.

The common issue most people evade, remove power cable, remove mobo battery for few mins, and put it back in, start the PC, used to work for me

Take it all out of the case and hook it up on a non-conductive surface. (motherboard box works for this)
Try it with just one RAM stick at a time.
With and without the video card installed. (using the onboard video)
Ensure that the Power plugs are both hooked up to the motherboard. (24pin and 4/8 pin)
Are you using stock Intel cooling?

As mentioned above, when you reset the CMOS make sure you remove the power supply to the motherboard so it is properly drained.

Also, I had this issue last week when I was tweaking my desk. Turns out I had not connected one of my GPU power connectors correctly and so as safety, wasnt booting.

Okay, so just got in from work, thanks for the suggestions, havnt tried any yet! Because..

While at work I got a text from my mate, after something I saw on the internet about some disconnecting there front USB and led cables.

My mate 'disconnected the cable that runs the led's and can now boot into BIOS' with error code 99. Later he also said that he can also get into windows fine.


So firstly, I am worried for him having something like this happening again. For some apparent reason this cable to the front of the case seems to be the problem but I cant understand why. Any suggestions?

Secondly, testing hardware. I would like to test all his components to make sure they are all working as expected. Can anyone suggest some software to do this for the GPU,CPU,Mobo,Ram?

Thirdly, his GPU fans are not spinning. (We took it out last night) Wonder if its related or just not back in properly. Will have to have a look at it later when I go round.

If you have the LED the wrong way round sometimes this can happen mate


Not knowing what GPU it is but a lot of them are passive at first and wont spin till they are hot - same with decent PSU's

Update, we got it working!
So it seemed to be one of the power cables for the motherboard was not in properly. We accidentally knocked it out and then once we put it back (it was very awkward to get in too get in, took us the best part of 30 mins) everything started running fine!

Yes you are right Tom, the GTX 970 MSI Twin Frozr does indeed only spin once hot!

Very strong chance its a bent pin on your motherboard. Manual will state Qcode 00 is not used but I recalled a conversation via RoG forums that 00 refers to "no cpu detected" if pins are fine, it could be that your cPU is defect.
