Video capturing software/hardware

Could anyone reccomend video capture software/hardware (e.g. VHS to PC)?

I have an old video camera and want to transfer the videos to my pc (old footage of me as a little nipper )

Vista home premium have the windows capture thing ? I know Ultimate does, perhaps it can be downloaded.

I used it on AVC capture over firewire, does the job.
