UV sterilizer (evaporator cooler)

What do you guys think about the "Danner PONDMASTER 20 watt UV Sterilizer" (ebay ~£50) for keeping the bios out of an evaporator cooler? I'm really close to building one, but I'm not sure how to keep it clean yet. (The last thing I need is more odors and bad stuff for my house)

you on about a bong cooler mate? if so you'd probably be best off with some iodine or similar antibacterial chemical, or even antifreeze in the coolant and keeping it covered (sealed up). You'll have to tell us more about your plans though, but £50 on a sterilizer seems like £50 wasted that could have been spent on something else.

Yeah a bong cooler; suppose that should be mentioned at some point huh :D I'm actually a complete noob to both liquid cooling and evaporators and don't fully understand my options for keeping a bong cooler sterile.

I'm leaning towards evaporative coolers right now just because, one, they could be awesome to build, and two, they will humidify my room which is extremely dry.

On the otherhand, I have really sensative eyes to random stuff so I was at first hesitant to start the project. What kind of iodine do I get, just the pharmacy over-the-counter stuff? I might like testing this stuff out before hand by just cramming it into a filter based humidifier. so what's my best bet as far as 'alergic irritation' goes with this stuff?

You can buy iodine drops (or chlorine) from most camping stores, I'm not sure that chemsits still sell iodine (mainly thanks to people like me). In terms of irritation, the chlorine or iodine is in such low concentration, the chance of it coming out of solution is decidedly limited. Unless you decided to use the cooler as an emergency eye wash. Do your eyes get irritated by tap water sitting on one side of the room, because that is in effect what you will have (minus all the nasties in tap water, such as dissolved minerals etc.)

Iodine as biocide in evaporator

:wavey:Ok, the moment draws very near (have tank, have pump in the mail, have tubing, have shower nozle, etc) and I need more help with the iodine (where to get it and it's usage).

Over in the US we can get brown bottles from our pharmacy depts. laboled Iodine (-something-or-other). You can put it on cuts to kill germs. Is this a suitable source of iodine (the nearby hiking store closed down do to an avalanche; luckily they managed to stave off starvation, by fishing and hunting deer, long enough to be rescued.)

Also, how much do I apply exactly?

Does iodine evaporate at the same rate as water? and

How many drops / tsps per liters?

I looked into an UV Sterilizer myself for my current build. Quite frankly, it's overkill.

The people in the forums here have mentioned Iodine which seems to work well.

I'm also looking into UV LEDs and liquid silver.

Iodine for purifying water is what you want, the stuff for cuts is not really ideal because its a spray, not drops. Ordinarily a drop will treat a few litres, read the label or do a google. Iodine won't evaporate kind of like if you put salt into water and let that evaporate, the salt will be left, so make sure you don't allow the iodine to come out of solution.

Thanks, I think I had iodine confused with hydrogen peroxide  I stopped by the pharmacy on my way back from returning a utility pump and found tincture iodine (with a dropper), but it's a tincture mixed down with ethonal though (and says "caution poison" on it). Is the sporting goods stuff mixed down with ethonal too or is it in water?

To quote wiki "When using free iodine to sanitize surface water, it should be left to sit for 30 minutes before drinking, allowing time for all viruses and bacteria to be killed. If the water temperature is less than 20 °C (68 °F), sitting time should be extended to several hours. To purify 1 L (34 oz) of water, 0.3 mL (0.01 oz) of 2% tincture should be used. Cold or cloudy water should be given 2.4 mL (0.08 oz) of 2% iodine, and should be left to sit for several hours."

So by the looks of it, this ethanolic solution is effectively iodine dissolved in ethanol, which will obviously dissolve in water as well (it forms an aqueous solution which is necessary for water purification). Obviously this is a poison as most biocides are, hence this will do the job. It will stain plastics and fabrics though so don't spill it on anything you don't want to go brown.

Liquid silver? Isn't that poisonous as hell? I remember AS5 being slightly poisonous because of a marginal amount of silver being in it.

It's called Colloidal Silver. 10 ppm. In a highly concentrated form silver can be lethal.

Silver has been used in the medical field for many years for sterilization, especially for burn victims. Can be used as an anti-biotic and also to sterilize drinking water.

HERE is a link if anyone is interested in reading about it. I orderd a bottle of this today and I'm going to add it to the system when it's up and running.

I got the idea from this LINK at Petra's Tech Shop from a product called "Silver KillCoils by iandh".

That looks really cool, thx for the link. Do you know how it works? like, does the silver bleed into solution, or does it simply kill any bios that come into contact with it?
