Using a projector as a monitor

Afternoon Guys!!

Just spoken to one of my neighbours and am possibly getting my hands on a used projector (not sure what connections et all it has) and was wondering what you all think in regards to which monitor I should lose.

Currently, I am using an 8800GT with a 19" connected via HDMI @ 1920 x 1080, and also a 17" at 1280 x 1024. My thinking is to get rid of the 17 and use the projector instead.

I'd like to connect both my PC and my 360 to the projector for some gaming awesomeness

Any suggestions?

Projectors aren't good for gaming, especially FPS, you will get ghosting and just a plain bad experience.

A decent projector for gaming would cost you, not mention the ghosting you would get as others have said. Monitors offer much better quality and nowadays you can get a very decent gaming monitor for under £180 such as the iiyama ProLite E2473HDS. Three of these for a great gaming experience would be a projector setup any day imo.

Yeah im saving up for a couple of them as well.

Gaming on a projector is not good for the projector bulb (you will be replacing them frequently). If you want even decent gaming on a projector you will be spending well over $7,000 for a projector.

Ok ma friend. ACTUALLY GET A GOOD PROJECTOR. These peps are throwing retarded amounts at you but, there all quite false

A good 720P or even a 1080P one is ruffly about 400-900 in actuality. I have heard great things about the Acer H5360 720P 3D, and the BenQ W1000+ 1080p. Give those a check out if you want something good that is not EXTREME in price.

Ok guys. I've actually got a Projector downstairs in a dedicated room.

I have it linked to a PC and a PS3 aswell as many other sources through a home cinema amp.

I Game on it and watch films on it.

There is no evidence of ghosting, and i'm on the same bulb that came with it 6 years ago.

What you will need for a good experience is a proper screen and total darkness. These are the 2 factors that massivly influence contrast and as a result the on screen experience.

Be very careful what size you project your image. It's very tempting to go huge but you will soon tire of it as you will have to keep moving your head and your eyes to take in the whole image.

im not sure Gaming does the bulbs any favours either..

A lot of these posts made me lol but this one the most. Cheers for the mis-information guys.

Bulb usage is the same for gaming as watching a movie or viewing a presentation, all of the activity is actually happening on a small LCD screen which is projected (hence the name) via the light from the bulb off of mirrors and thru lenses.

@ OP - I say give it a pop mate, you wont be losing much (assuming the projector wont cost too much). I have a projector setup in my kids room for them to watch films and play their 360 and it is freakin excellent, and it aint a new DLP projector either its a fatty old JVC LX D1000E. Have fun.

i never set out to deliberatly mislead anyone on these forums, and i apologise i am not as wise in all things as you seem to be...

I read your statement as if it was a figure of speech.

I have included a definition of 'figure of speech' below so you won't make the mistake of accusing me of flaming again. /nuff said.

A figure of speech is the use of a word or words diverging from its usual meaning. It can also be a special repetition, arrangement or omission of words with literal meaning, or a phrase with a specialized meaning not based on the literal meaning of the words in it, as in idiom, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, or personification. Figures of speech often provide emphasis, freshness of expression, or clarity. However, clarity may also suffer from their use, as any figure of speech introduces an ambiguity between literal and figurative interpretation. A figure of speech is sometimes called a rhetorical figure or a locution.

Nah Critical's right, there's no reason for gaming to have any more adverse effect on the projector lifetime than any other content it might display. It's like a power supply, it'll only suffer under heavy load if it's pants quality

We used to watch dvds and game on one, just on a white wall with surround sound, years ago like 2002 and it was worth it.

The cons though, had to be dark night time and the pic - well it was weaker.

Pro it.. total emmersion(sp) becasue of the massive size. I most clearly remember Silent Hill just was so intense... just petrifying..

And car racing.. I'd be slipping from the couch trying to apply excelerator and brakes I was that emmersed..

My friend had it for about 3 years, using it nightly for 4 or 5 hours and the bulb was ok.

Scan.co.uk sell a very nice range of dlp projectors, upto a grand (for 1080p 3d, deep blacks. Half decent projectors dont even need complete darkness nowadays, then again its never really bright in the highlands

and the reaction speed doesnt suffer, for my liking anyway.

Well if you're getting a good price you might as well, my mate has this with a PS3 and sitting in front of a massive screen with wheels and a pedal playing GRID is just epic, if you have a good sound system that makes it a whole lot better. Decent projectors will cost you over a grand, especially the 1080p ones, but again if you're getting this for a good price or even free then you may as well try it out.

I think you all are missing the point of this...

The man is using a 1280x1024 monitor... that is 17 inches ontop of that as a desktop monitor... ANY projector including ghosting like Casper would be better than that.

Yes get the projector IMO
