OK> I need to build a server asap, and was wondering, should I get this AMD operaton 6-core 2.0ghz: http://www.amazon.com/Asus-KGPE-D16-AMD-Opteron-Server/dp/B003JTHOB2/ref=pd_sim_e2 (that is the mobo, and two of these: http://www.amazon.com/AMD-Opteron-Magny-Cours-Processor-OS6128WKT8EGOWOF/dp/B003BYRHOE/ref=pd_cp_e_1 . they are cheap and I think the best ones I can put in there. (i'd spend up to 500 on the board, 500 on each CPU, then I would like to max the ram out with the best mhz/brand possible. That would be sweet to have 12 cores like that, but then again there are these same priced intel processors:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117224

Two of these 4 core xeon's at 2.66ghz, could I even OC that, and would that come close to the 12 core build above? Im not even sure what good motherboard would take those.

Now look at this insane motherboard : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Image...520 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HPTX Intel Motherboard its $600 bucks and takes LGA 1366, yet it only takes up to 1333mhz ram, so I thought I could just put ANY lga 1366 processor in there, like an i7 990x, put two of those, and a ton of 1333mhz, and would that be godly? thats obv. a bit expensive, but I would like to get as close to something like that as possible. I already have a godly 2600k, and frankly I built it for extreme OC and its at 4.6 barely breaking 30c and I can't go higher because thats just it, so now I would like to build a server that I can always have on and use as a workstation if I need, but to host multipule VM's game servers, voip servers etc... If you can point me in the right direction, especially what motherboard would work for the xenons I posted above (lga 1156) that would be a 'baller' board with lots of ram capacity etc, and can I just get any 1333mhz DDDR3 or does it have to be like some weird non-ecc old school "Poweredge 600sc" type ram (some old shit server my dad had)

THanks!

I already have this board : http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Maximus-IV-Extreme-Motherboards/dp/B005584ZEO/ref=pd_sim_e4 with the i7-2600k, is there some server application/board that would take two of those? Or can I just pop in this new i7 when it comes out in 2-3 months.... http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_i7/Intel-Core i7 Extreme Edition i7-3960X.html look at that... wtf.... but anyways I could always build that later, I need something put together by the end of this month, and I need it to be as powerful as it can be for the money (1500) for mobo + cpu ~ or less. But I already have the case (smaller one this time, cooler master HAF 912, and a bunch of solid states 550/read and write (corsair force gt3) etc etc, so all I need is the mobo and cpu then ill sli/xfire a few cards because ive never done that and even cheap ones are really good these days. (and in my main machine I have the gtx 580) so that will last a while. But yea what 1333mhz ram would you recommend ? Gskill ? people were praising it, 7-7-7-24 etc..

but I think I narrowed it down to either two of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117224

or two of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819105266 , yea wow the amd ones are 8 cores, so thats 8core INTEL (total) vs 16core amd, (unless you know of other processors around 400-500 bux that would be better, please post because I will order tomorrow if I get a good selection. Thanks for the help guys!

Also, is theer a board that takes two AMD 1100t black editions (best ones out right now for desktops, 6 core), that takes two, for server applications, so then I could order the Asus Crosshair IV/thunderbolt, its a new one that came out, but made for the new AM3/+ stuff, and then I can put a nice bulldozer in there and move the wimpy old 1100t to another board that has two of em and a assload of ram? any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks

Or here is a good example, one 4 core intel at 3.4, I would get 2, or one 6 core at 2.4, which would be better as a gaming desktop 10% of the time, then just fileserver/webserver/backup/tons of space/media center., basically eveerything else:

4core @ 3.4ghz : http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=XEON1270BX

6core @ 2.4ghz : http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=XEON5645 (yet this has 12mb, while the 4 core only has 8, so this would be far superior?)

What would be the nicest mobo I could pair up with that bottom one and get a bunch of quality ram for, unlesss you guys find a sick 8 core thats under like 600-700bucks, ill spend that much most on 2 processors, and at least 1k max on ram

AH and the first one, 4core 3.4ghz is a 1155, so I could just use my same MOBO now with the i72600k right? the other is LGA 1366, and the only mobo for that is that insane 600$ one, but hey that would be insane, but my case is just too small, maybe I will just swap cases but idk.... damn. Plus 600 for a mobo is a LOT, i could do it, but i'd be more comfortable with 350-400, cuz I still have to fill it with ram and vid card.

I don't know much about servers but I can have some input on the RAM. I know patriot just came out with 8GB single DIMM cards so on the SR-2 you can throw in a total of 96GB of ram however the timings are a little slower. Here's a video for you to watch and the stability test on a Gigabyte board

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0eGh3cPt0w&feature=channel_video_title

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vg07DVkmwUg&feature=channel_video_title

And here's the patriot site: http://patriotmemory.com/products/detailp.jsp?prodline=5&catid=34&prodgroupid=196&id=1126&type=1

These probably a little slower but this would be the most memory you could cram onto the SR-2

Might I ask what the server will be used for?

Oh and i need to add, to my working knowledge of dual CPU mobo's you need an INtel Xeon the equivalent AMD type chip. Regular chips do not run in a dual CPU set up. I am not to sure why this is but that's just what my limited knowledge of the subject is telling me.

Ah becasue they need an extra QPI link, so hmm wow that mobo is INSANE,

can someone explain why this CPU is half the price of the one with less cores and speed:

ntel Xeon W3670 Westmere-EP 3.2GHz LGA 1366 130W Six-Core Server Processor BX80613W3670

Series: Xeon

L3 Cache: 12MB

Manufacturing Tech: 32 nm

64 bit Support: Yes

Model #: BX80613W3670

Item #: N82E16819117252

Return Policy: CPU Replacement Only Return Policy

^^ THAT IS 600 BUCKS - and a baller 6 core lga 1366 server processor

THIS IS 1600 dollars....

Intel Xeon W5580 Nehalem 3.2GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Server Processor BX80602W5580

Series: Xeon

L2 Cache: 4 x 256KB

L3 Cache: 8MB

Manufacturing Tech: 45 nm

Model #: BX80602W5580

Item #: N82E16819117179

Return Policy: CPU Replacement Only Return Policy

ONLY 4 CORE ?!

wtf is that? its 45nm, 35nm is wayyy better, but I dont see an L2 cache on the 600 dollar one, so is that why? wtf

I'd go with the cheaper one as i couldn't find a 600 dollar one that's above 3GHz and throw 2 of those into the SR-2
