Upgrading - Starting At CPU

Hi All, im thinking of upgrading my old pc and have been looking at the choice available and im starting with the cpu, the two ive been looking at are the i7 3770k 1155 IB (£255) and the i7 3820 2011 SBE (£215)... Im not a games player (apart from MAME and WinUAE but they'd run on anything) but do the odd video and photo editing. So im just asking which would be best to buy? Thanks...

3770k is slightly faster than the 3820. If you only do the "odd" video and photo editing, quad channel memory won't help out much either and a socket 1155 board still provides 4 RAM lanes, which is enough for up to (8x4) 32 GB of memory. WAY more than you're probably ever going to need :)

Only advantage that x79 might give you over z77 is that on some boards you get more SATA ports, but you still get 6-8 ports on most z77 boards

Between the 3770k and the 3820... Id go with the ... FX-8350 :D . Them 8 cores might actually help a bit for your needs..
If not go for that beautiful 3770k :)

Thanks for the input :) ive been watching the prices on a local shop and the i7 3770k and Asus P8Z77-V LX is £318 and a i5 3570k with the same board is £240... I love spending as little as possible :P

Depends, how odd exactly is that video and photo editing that you do and with what purpose? (Holiday videos, Youtube vids, just for the heck of it?) :p

With the AMD you would spend less. AM3+ boards (990FX) are less expensive than Intel boards. And the FX-8350 is on par with the 3570 k... you will save a lil' bit of money. Anyway, you chose in the end :)

Hahaha did someone mention work? :P nah, i have been learning about cleaning up old family pictures and removing all the flaws and even trying to add colour to b&w ones, as for the vids, the rest is just fun, a bit of astrophotography and timelapse vids, so nothing too serious. As for AMD, ive never really been a fan, had one or two a few years ago and always ended up going back to Intel.

Well, the 3570k only costs a bit more so I'd deffinitely go Intel as they offer you much more power per core. It's on par with AMDs 8 core flagship, though yes, the AMD has 8 cores which would help in rendering, no, I wouldn't buy it personally.

The i5 offers plenty performance for what you want to do with it imo, just pair it up with a nice amount of higher speed RAM and you'll be more than fine. Going for the i5 also gives you the ability to upgrade, where with the AMD you already have their best CPU so you can't really upgrade anymore

Don't go AMD...
Their new chips have nothing on Intel.

I'd go for the 3570k or the 3770k, depending on what budget allows, and get an MSI Z77-G45 or a GD55/65 or mPower if you can afford it.
MSI boards are about the best around on the Z77 platform, and the low end Asus boards are a little too stripped down.

Well, I haven't tried either CPU but as far as I know (I should say as far as I have read) the AMD FX-8xxx is not that bad compared to the i7 when you're not gaming and apparently it's good at video editing/rendering etc. Memory access is slower but it acts as an octo-core as long as you make it work mostly with integer operations (quad core with FPU operations, maybe some filters do this I am not sure). The i7 is gonna consume less anyway. Remember this is somethingI read around in reviews and benchmarks, I do not own any of those CPUs and you should listen to the more experienced people around here. I am pointing this out in case I am wrong I can get corrected.
Cheers!
