Upgrading PC, Help!

Hello, I'm planning to upgrade my computer, here are the specs:

RAM: OCZ 6GB DDR3 1600MHz/PC3-12800 Platinum Triple Channel CL7

Mobo: Asus Deluxe V2 X58

Processor: Intel Core i7 920 2.66

PSU: OCZ StealthXStream 700W or GamerXStream 850W (not sure,needhelp!)

GFX: 8800GT 1GB (Already having the 512mb, so will use dual)

- for such a system, do i really need 850W or 700W is quite enough? i'll be getting the i7 D0 stepping cpu, so i'll overclock it with the ram as well.

- one more question, if i plan to get the GTX 260, can i SLI it with the 8800gt

First of all, Welcome to c3d:

That's a nice system you are building there mate. 700W is easily enough to power the hardware you have listed, either with single or dual 8800 GT's. As for SLIing a GTX260 and an 8800GT, unfortunately it's not possible as both cards must be the same model.

Although you can't SLI an 8800GT and a GTX260 you can always add your GTX260 as your primary GPU and let the 8800GT destroy physx processes as your physx processing card. This is not something that's used by all games, but little by little more and more games are using physx in their games so it should become more valuable as time goes by.

Now although 700 watts should be enought to power your setup and even a GTX260 along with an 8800GT you still need to consider the amperage the PSU can output. Please post which 700watt PSu your referring to so you can be sure it will be enough for the long haul.

To check that you would need to see how much amparage the +12v rail/s can output and match that up to the current requirements for such a setup. As for a core i7 with a gtx260 you would probably need around 40-45 amps after your overclock of the CPU, but that's just my rough estimate.

Often wondered why some people have bought a 260 and kept the 8800gt for physx.

Seemed logical to me that perhaps they sell the 8800gt and spend that extra cash on a 280+ ?

Yeah, that's true it would be better to have a single more powerful card, but if you don't want to hassle with selling the card or you already have made the purchase of a GTX260 the 8800GT as physx is not a bad idea and better then sitting away collecting dust.
