Upgrading my Mobile Video Editing Station

Currently running the following:

Intel i7 860 2.8ghz w/ huge passive cooler
win7 64 bit
8 gigs ram
radeon 4870 GPU (replacing)
Some ridiculously powerful PSU
Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 mobo mATX

Im upgrading to a Canon 5DMKIII soon and will be shooting raw video - I need an nvidia card with cuda for after effects.

I have a small mobile custom case that will just barely fit a full size video card and I'd like to move so something smaller to have easier access to the HDD. Ive been looking at this:

Overkill for my system? I also plan to upgrade the ram to 32GB, with a solid state (or two, one for the swapdrive) down the line. My motherboard officially only supports 16GB max (4 slots), but I think I should be able to get away with 32? Or is there a hardware limitation in there somewhere?

I do mainly editing in premiere / avid, grading in AE or resolve, and compositing / particle effects etc etc in After Effects

Depending on which software version you are using, AMD Gpus will be a better fit for you with the use of OpenCL(it performs better). If you're software only supports CUDA then obviously get cuda(mainly used for the raytracing)..

But for the price and the size that GTX 760 is a very very strong card. Overkill? Not really no.

As for the memory you can only get 16GB because the motherboard does not see the other 16GB.. Would need to upgrade the board to be able to get more. If you go for a new board mine as well go for a new CPU too as you will probably have trouble looking for a P55 board.

Also as a quick tip, Get one single bigger SSD over two. Makes things easier to manage inside the case and inside the OS.

Cant all the Nvidia GPU's do OpenCL as well?

I thought I read somewhere someone got 32GB working on this mobo - is it the intel chipset restricting it?

If I can only go 16 for the RAM, would adding a small SSD soley for the pagefile and swapspace of the Adobe Apps compensate for less RAM? Honestly cant afford a large one at the moment - I need to invest my money in archival storage

They can run OpenCL yes but they are terrible at it.. a 7870 running OpenCL will beat a GTX Titan running OpenCL(yes its true). Due to architecture designs and hardware support is why tjeu perform better. Not sure about the new Maxwell cards though. No tests have been done on those yet.

All Other P55 chipsets list max of 16Gb of ram so yes the chipset restricts it.

You can't use an SSD for compensating on the amount of ram. Never use an SSD for Pagefile. Grab a 250GB+ SSD to load Windows and Adobe software(and any other software you need to be speedy) and then put everything else on a secondary drive(as in save all the files and less meaningful programs onto the storage drive). If you want a pagefile you can offload it to the HDD but if you ever have to use the virtual memory it will be super super slow.. doubt you will hit 16GB though if you are not doing multiple renders and projects all at the same time though.
