I dont think 4k for gaming is their idea, however with the sony VR headset around the corner of which they will of been i think primarily for ps4 as a look what we can do thing.
This is to allow their own headset to be able to get 1080p with a high enough refresh rate to not make people feel sick or have seizures like the nintendo version did many years ago.

Well thats what i think anyway. And if it can play Blu-ray in full 4k people will just buy the ps4 for that like what people did originally so they can bump the price a bit as the non upscaled ones tend to be rather pricey.

wonder if they will also take a loss on them or break even?

It's just gonna be a slim version. Idk why everyone is so adamant it'll be a whole new console. That would really anger consumers who have already bought one. It's only been 3 years after all. In addition, devs would probably be very annoyed having to make 2 versions of the same game for the same console. Just don't see it happening

If Sony are committed to making an updated PS4 I really do not think that they will make a totally new chip to power it. Sony did not build the chip in the current PS4 to last a mere three years.

I do think that if they want to make a better PS4 they could release a model with the two locked CUs, add some faster RAM and overclock the parts a bit. They could Easily get 25% more performance there, which isn't that small of a bump.

Nobody runs at 4K really, barely anyone owns a 4K TV, so why make a 4K UBER PS4? At best they can make an enhanced 1080p PS4 that supports 4K media, even with a new SOC. I don't think Sony could afford to make a new £500 console and have it sell well when so little time has passed since the PS4 launched.

Also, why Codename Neo, is Xbox not "The One"?

I get what your saying, however that still ends up with the same issue with devs having to create an alternative version to take advantage of the more available power.
In addition, still angers consumers who already purchased one before this newer update.

It can already output 4k, however the blu ray player in it cannot and it's HDMI can't either. If they merely updated those, it solves the 4k media problem and still keeps the same performance. I can see them using 20nm or even 16nm, but using those better chips for power consumption.. Aka a new slim

20nm or 16nm? Come on, this is an AMD SOC, 14nm.

At launch it was 28nm.. 14nm wasn't available from anybody but Intel at that time. It has potential to be 14nm, but not sure if the prices would be ideal for them as well as yields. So 16 or 20nm would help with that issue

Man, if only there was some sort of system out there that let you take out aging parts and insert new parts, especially while keeping the central thing that does all the processing and the main whatchamacallit that everything plugs into intact...one can dream.

If only.... lol

Consoles still have their place. Up until last year I could buy a brand new AAA game for PS3 (even though it's ancient) and it plays fine. I couldn't say the same for PC. There are always exceptions though.

No they're not as good or flexible but I'd hate to let a 7 year old on my rig but happy to let them smash the buttons on my Playstation.

I see your point

I think the biggest issue is getting games before dx9 to run I miss some old titles but they don't even like wide screen lol let alone HD or uhd.

But on the gaming front when I take my rig to my mates house her girls loved playing on my pc, even the same games they have on Xbox and Xbox one, they run smoother and more crisp except maybe lego the movie game ... but anyway they just plug their controllers into a spare USB port on the pc and bam kids quiet for hours!!

There is one... its called a PC.

Master race blah blah and all that stuff :D

He was being sarcastic^_^

Very Sarcastic : )

I appreciate the turn on and go nature of consoles and would F$*KING LOVE IT if developers brought local co-op back to PC's. It just seems like the last iterations really were very incremental improvements and this updated PS4 is just another one of those. Wonder when MS will hop on the 4K marketing bandwagon. Maybe next round can all run at 1080? It just seems designed to really push more units (can't fault them for wanting to sell more stuff) while maybe being a bit misleading?

I love consoles, just old ones. It took my gf and I longer to decide to buy a $50 used Wii than it did to buy a house. The N64 regularly comes out for post-bar Mario Kart tournaments.
